Man Dies In Riverhead E-Bike Crash: Police

He was found in the parking lot of a Riverhead clothing store, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A man died after an e-bike crash in Riverhead Wednesday, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, the incident took place at 5:39 p.m. on Old Country Road.

Police responded to the rear parking lot of Ross Dress for Less in the Roanoke Plaza, where the man was found lying on the ground, unconscious and in traumatic arrest, authorities said.

Upon investigation, it was determined that John Sanmartino, 54, who was undomiciled, had been operating an electric bicycle and collided into a chain link fence along the western tree line, police said.

He had not been wearing a safety helmet, police said.

Sanmartino was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Ambulance Corps, where he succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The Riverhead Police Department's detective division responded for further investigation, police said.
