Wading River Fire Department's 1st Lieutenant Honored By Legislator: 'Grateful For All He Does'

WADING RIVER, NY — Suffolk County Legislator Greg Doroski honored Wading River Fire Department First Lieutenant Matthew Jakubowsky as the District 1 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year during a special Suffolk County Legislature ceremony recognizing an outstanding volunteer firefighter from each of the county’s 18 legislative districts this week.

Jakubowsky joined the Wading River Fire Department in 2023 "and quickly distinguished himself through his dedication to training, leadership, and service. He currently serves as First Lieutenant, helping to lead and train firefighters and first responders," Doroski said.

As an officer, he has played an important role in rebuilding Station 2 following its closure, helping to revitalize the station and strengthen the department’s service to the Wading River community, Doroski added.

Jakubowsky has pursued extensive training through the Suffolk County Fire Academy, FEMA and other organizations. He completed Fire Officer I and earned national certification as a hazardous materials technician through the Center for Domestic Preparedness, in addition to advanced coursework in firefighting, rescue operations and officer development, officials said.

His service was recognized by the Wading River Fire Department this year when he received the Chief’s Award and earned 147 points as a High Points Award recipient, officials added.

“Matthew represents the very best of our volunteer fire service," said Legislator Doroski. "In just a few short years, he has stepped up as a leader, put in countless hours of training and service, and taken on tremendous responsibility. We have so many dedicated volunteer firefighters serving communities throughout District 1, which makes it especially meaningful to recognize Matthew as our District 1 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year. I am proud to honor him and grateful for all he does for Wading River and our community."

Outside the fire service, Matthew brings that same drive to his education and professional career. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance, summa cum laude, and his MBA in Finance from St. John’s University, completing his graduate degree with a 4.0 GPA. He currently works as a revenue analyst in the financial services industry, officials said.

The September 16 ceremony was held at the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium in the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge. Legislator Doroski presented Matthew with a proclamation from the Suffolk County Legislature "recognizing his outstanding leadership, selfless service, and commitment to protecting his community," Doroski said.
