Sayville High School Students Participate in Community Connect Day

Participants Complete 31 Community Service Projects

Students from Sayville High School recently took to the local community for a day of service as part of the third annual Community Connect Day. Students, faculty, and staff participated in 31 service projects across Sayville and West Sayville.

"Community Connect Day highlights the meaningful impact our students can have on the community,” said Sayville High School Principal Stephanie Bricker. “By working together, our students, faculty, and staff complete projects that make a real difference for local organizations, residents, and public spaces. The day is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through service, teamwork, and community pride."

Students worked on a wide range of beautification efforts, including projects at Rotary Park, Sayville Marina Park, Meadow Croft Estate, Gillette Avenue South Field, Broadway Avenue Park, and the community spaces supported through Common Ground and Sayville Improvement Society initiatives. Additional projects included trash can beautification, picket fence painting, and ongoing stewardship efforts that enhance shared public spaces throughout the community.

Students also dedicated their time to supporting local organizations and civic groups, including United Community Preschool, Sayville Little League, The Bristal Assisted Living, Sayville Historical Society, Baymen Soccer Club, Sayville Library, Save the Great South Bay, Long Island Maritime Museum, LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum, and The Chamber of Commerce at Kay Porter Park. Service efforts further extended to the other four schools in the district—Sayville Middle School, Lincoln Avenue Elementary, Sunrise Drive Elementary, and Cherry Avenue Elementary.

In support of local veterans, students participated in activities including Sayville Veteran Gravestone Restoration, assistance through the Sayville Civic Association, and service projects connected to the Sayville Post 433 VFW. Additional efforts included support for veterans and military outreach initiatives across the district and community.

Students also helped address food insecurity by supporting the Sayville Food Pantry & Soup Kitchen, the Sayville School District Pantry, and Mercy House, where they sorted donations and assembled care packages filled with essential items.

The day began with student groups gathering to review their plans, connect with one another, and watch videos that helped set the tone for the service ahead. Each group also created a mosaic piece representing their project, which will be combined to form a larger collaborative display celebrating the collective impact of the event. When it came time for the community projects, some groups traveled by bus to more distant sites, while others walked to nearby locations within the community.

“Community Connect Day is a powerful reflection of what makes Sayville special,” Dr. Marc Ferris, Superintendent of Schools, said. “Our students, faculty, and staff come together with a shared purpose to serve others, strengthen connections, and give back to the community that supports them. The impact of their work is felt far beyond a single day.”
