Temporary Work Platforms To Be Constructed As Part of Smith Point Bridge Plans

SHIRLEY, NY — Cranes are now on site, and crews are constructing temporary work platforms for the new Smith Point Bridge that will extend into the bay from both the north and south sides of the channel, essentially meeting in the middle, Legis. Jim Mazzarella said in an update of the construction posted to Facebook this week.

The platforms will leave a 100-foot-wide opening for marine traffic while providing the access needed for the next major phase of construction.

The platforms, working in conjunction with a barge, will be used to begin installing around 145 pilings that will form the foundation of the new bridge. Pile driving is expected to begin by the end of September or early October, and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.

Mazzarella called it "an important step forward in the construction" of the new bridge.
