LI Woman Charged With DWI With Child After Crashing Onto Tennis Court: PD

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — A Ronkonkoma woman was charged with driving while intoxicated with her 10-year-old daughter in the car before crashing through a fence and onto a tennis court Tuesday afternoon, Suffolk County police said.

Kimberly Shortell, 41, was driving a 2025 Hyundai Sonata when she dropped her daughter off at the Islip Town Beach on Rosevale Avenue at about 3:55 p.m., police said.

After dropping off her daughter, Shortell struck a parked car, drove through a chain-link fence and onto a tennis court before crashing into another chain-link fence on the opposite side of the court, according to police.

No one was on the tennis courts at the time, police said.

Shortell was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

She was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger younger than 15, driving while ability impaired by drugs and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

Shortell is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip at a later date.
