What's New In Smithtown: Town Launches Major Spring Work On Roads, Parks Ahead Of Summer
Paving, park maintenance, and community initiatives are underway across Smithtown, town officials say.
SMITHTOWN, NY — The Town of Smithtown is ramping up infrastructure work, park improvements, and community programming to prepare for the busy summer season, officials said.
Paving season has officially begun, with the town’s Highway Department already completing work along Edgewood Avenue during spring break to limit disruption for families and schools. Roadway striping has also been finalized, improving safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, town officials said.
In the coming weeks, crews are expected to address damage to sidewalks, curbs, and aprons across residential areas. Concrete repairs are underway in Kings Park, including on 8th Avenue, 5th Avenue, Eugene Drive, Gail Court, Donald Drive, Hileen Drive, and Marvin Drive, with paving to follow.

Officials said the town is also working to secure and utilize outside funding to expand infrastructure work. About $5 million in federal Community Project Funding, secured with the support of Nick LaLota, is being tracked to support paving projects. An additional $5 million in HUD funding is being pursued to address major corridors, including Brooksite Drive, Old Willets Path, and Plymouth Boulevard.
Officials said the Parks Department has begun spring planting, field aeration, fertilization, irrigation maintenance, and turf management in coordination with local athletic schedules. Cleanup efforts are also underway at parks, playgrounds, and waterfront facilities, including painting, plumbing work, and reopening restrooms and showers at beaches.

Additional projects planned in the coming weeks include installing channel markers and buoys, building lifeguard chairs, deploying docks at the Bluff, Long Beach, and Landing Avenue, and repairing marina infrastructure.
Work is also progressing at the town’s Senior Center, where first-floor plumbing and electrical upgrades for new restrooms have been completed. Officials said the next phase will focus on renovations to the main auditorium, a key space for community programming.
The town is also continuing its seasonal events and initiatives. More than 800 households participated in the April 18 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event, safely disposing of materials such as paint, batteries, and propane tanks. The next collection event is scheduled for July 11 at the Municipal Services Facility in Kings Park. A paper-shredding event is also planned for May 2 at the same location, where residents can pick up free mulch.
Smithtown also recognized local youth during the annual Altruistic Youth Awards Ceremony, honoring students for leadership and community service. The event highlighted both individual award recipients and graduating members of the Youth Advisory Board.
Recreation programming is also expanding, including a planned donation of toys to the pediatric unit at Stony Brook Hospital and an upcoming May 2 trip to Broadway featuring shows such as & Juliet and Death Becomes Her.
Town officials said residents can expect to continue seeing crews working throughout the spring on infrastructure and quality-of-life improvements.
“These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to infrastructure, recreation, and community investment,” Wehrheim said.
