Flood Watch In Effect For Parts Of Long Island Tuesday Into Wednesday: NWS

LONG ISLAND, NY — Most of Long Island is under a flood watch from Tuesday afternoon until Wednesday evening, the National Weather Service said.

According to the NWS, the flood watch was issued for western Suffolk County and all of Nassau County. While the East End is not under a flood watch, showers and thunderstorms are still expected.

A high rip current risk is in effect through Tuesday evening across all of southern Suffolk and Nassau Counties, the NWS added.

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible, the NWS said; excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

A slow-moving low pressure system will bring multiple rounds of heavy showers and thunderstorms to the area Tuesday through Wednesday. Average rainfall amounts are expected to be between 2 and 3 inches with localized higher amounts, the NWS said. Peak hourly rainfall rates could be as high as 1.5 to 2.5 inches in the heaviest showers and thunderstorms, the NWS said.

Residents should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings; those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop, the NWS said.

Tuesday

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. South wind 11 to 15 mph.

Tuesday night

A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 8 p.m. Low around 69. South wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Wednesday

Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 11 a.m., then a chance of showers between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Southeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Wednesday night

A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. South wind around 7 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Thursday

A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Thursday night

A 30 percent chance of showers before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66.
