20 Brookhaven Beaches Part Of Dozens Across Suffolk Officials Advise Swimming Is Unsafe After Heavy Rainfall

BROOKHAVEN TOWN, NY — For the third time this summer, 20 beaches, along Brookhaven Town's North Shore, are part of a group of dozens across Suffolk that officials have advised against bathing in after heavy rainfall last night, the county's Department of Health Services said Tuesday.

The beaches were also closed to swimming on and off last month.

Tides Beach in Rocky Point, where bathing was previously advised against, remains closed.

The advisory is based on the potential that bacteria levels at these beaches exceed state standards. The beaches covered by the advisory are in areas heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds or adjacent tributaries. Because of their location in an enclosed embayment, they experience limited tidal flushing.

Health officials recommend bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycle — at least a 24-hour period — after the rain has ended.

The advisory is expected to be lifted on Thursday at 7 a.m.
