21 Brookhaven Town Beaches Part Of 63 Across Suffolk Officials Advise Swimming Is Unsafe After Heavy Rain

STONY BROOK, NY — For the second time this summer, 21 beaches along Brookhaven Town's North Shore are part of a group of 63 across Suffolk that officials have advised against bathing in after heavy rainfall last night, the county's Department of Health Services said Friday.

The beaches were also closed to swimming earlier this month.

The advisory is based on the potential that bacteria levels at these beaches exceed state standards. The beaches covered by the advisory are in areas heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds or adjacent tributaries. Because of their location in an enclosed embayment, they experience limited tidal flushing.

Health officials recommend bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycle — at least a 24-hour period — after the rain has ended.

The advisory is expected to be lifted on Saturday at 8 a.m.
