Dance/NYC&nbsp;today announced that tickets are on sale for&nbsp;NEW YORKERS FOR DANCE,&nbsp;the organization’s celebration in support of its work advancing equity and opportunity across the New York City dance field. The event will take place this year on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 6:00–9:00 p.m. at 26 Bridge in DUMBO, Brooklyn.
This year, Dance/NYC is calling its broader community to the dance floor—artists, advocates, funders, policymakers, and neighbors—for an evening that celebrates dance as a powerful force for connection, cultural expression, and belonging, and an invitation to imagine a future where dance is valued as a common good. By bringing people together on the dance floor, NEW YORKERS FOR DANCE recognizes that gathering through movement is one of the ways community is built, culture is shared, and lasting support for dance grows. The evening reflects Dance/NYC's vision of a stronger, more connected dance ecosystem where everyone has a place on the dance floor and everyone has a role in shaping the future of the field.
The night will feature a dance party with music by&nbsp;DJ Ali Coleman, an open bar and hors d’oeuvres, and pop-up installations by local artists and Dance/NYC grantees. All proceeds support Dance/NYC's work investing directly in dance workers, expanding access to resources and professional development, and advocating for policies that strengthen the dance workforce.

The class is offered at two levels:&nbsp;Foundations, a basic overview of all aspects of producing, will be offered Tuesday evenings in October, 2026, and a more advanced&nbsp;Master Class&nbsp;focusing on individual projects will be offered on Monday nights. FOUNDATIONS&nbsp;is open to everyone interested in producing, including artists who are wise enough to want to know about the business;&nbsp;MASTER CLASS&nbsp;is open to graduates of the Foundations Class, people who have taken previous TRU workshops or the Commercial Theatre Institute 14-week or other CTI or Business of Broadway courses, or those with equivalent producing experience. All candidates must have a specific theatrical project that they are leading towards production. Self-producing artists are encouraged to apply.
Foundations Price: $325 for new members, $270 for returning members and students (ID required).&nbsp;The program will meet one or two evenings a month from October through January (<a href="https://null" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">see schedule here</a>) – that's 10 sessions ($31 per session). This August, Battery Dance returns to the waterfront in spectacular fashion, transforming Wagner Park into a vibrant hub of movement, music, and cultural celebration in partnership with Battery Park City Authority. On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the performances officially begin as the Festival proudly celebrates its legacy as New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival—an unforgettable annual tradition that brings together extraordinary artists and audiences from around the world.
The 45th Annual Battery Dance Festival marks a milestone moment, honoring 50 years of Battery Dance and the visionary leadership of founder and Artistic Director Jonathan Hollander. This landmark edition showcases a dazzling, multicultural lineup of artists, featuring bold voices and movement traditions from across the globe—uniting genres, cultures, and creative perspectives in a powerful celebration of artistic expression.“Jonathan Hollander founded Battery Dance in 1976, and we are very proud to celebrate our&nbsp;legendary founder’s 50 years of leadership this summer with these spectacular&nbsp;performances,”&nbsp;said Executive Director Emad M. Noguchi Taiso is a Japanese body release practice developed by Michizo Noguchi that emphasizes relaxation, fluidity, and responsiveness to gravity. Widely practiced by Butoh dancers, it serves as a foundational training method for cultivating receptivity, effortless movement, and bodily awareness. Beginners are welcome.
This&nbsp;program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, and the New York Department of Cultural Affairs, and the City Council.
Melissa Lohman&nbsp;is a teacher, performer, choreographer, and visual artist from New York City, currently based in Rome, Italy. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2000. Since the mid-1990s, she has created performances for theaters, museums, galleries, and unconventional spaces internationally. Her artistic practice explores inhabiting a space and being observed, rather than presenting something to an audience.
Recent projects include&nbsp;Lean&nbsp;(2026), a performance-installation with Flavio Arcangeli presented at the Nervi Pavilion in Rome for Open House Rome XIV Edition;&nbsp;Contemplate Your Navel!&nbsp;(2025), a solo exhibition featuring performances, drawings, video, sculpture, and a series of movement and drawing workshops; and&nbsp;Tramite&nbsp;(2024), a performance created within Fabrizio Crisafulli's light installation of the same title, presented in the burial chamber of the Pyramid of Caius Cestius in Rome as part of&nbsp;Piramide Contemporaneo.
In 2023, Melissa performed a durational work for Crisafulli's installation&nbsp;Transiti&nbsp;at the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara. In 2022, she danced alongside her Noguchi Taiso teacher, Mari Osanai, in&nbsp;Deposition&nbsp;at the Kyoto International Butoh Festival. That same year, she collaborated with Flavio Arcangeli on&nbsp;Across, a site-specific performance at MAXXI Museum in Rome presented during&nbsp;The Heretical Body: Butoh Dance from Its Inception Until Today. Earlier projects include&nbsp;A Sweet Topia&nbsp;(2021), a site-specific performance and solo exhibition at Museo delle Mura in Rome. From 2018 to 2020, she was an invited performer at the New York Butoh Institute Festival.
Vangeline&nbsp;is a New York–based teacher, choreographer, and dancer specializing in Japanese Butoh. As the artistic director of the Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute, she is widely recognized for her rigorous, research-driven approach to Butoh and for expanding the form’s relevance in the 21st century. Her work actively champions diversity and inclusion within the field, creating space for historically underrepresented voices. She carries forward the legacy of Butoh while infusing it with contemporary relevance—through activism, research, and performance.

At the heart of Vangeline’s philosophy is the belief that Butoh can be a tool for both personal and collective transformation. Her work reflects a deep commitment to integrating the many dimensions of the human experience—beauty and darkness alike—and reintegrating society’s marginalized voices.
Vangeline’s choreography has been presented internationally in Chile, Germany, Italy, France, Finland, Denmark, the UK, Mexico, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan. She is the recipient of a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Dance Award for her groundbreaking project&nbsp;The Slowest Wave, which explores the intersection of Butoh and neuroscience. She was also a 2022–2023 Gibney Dance in Process resident artist, a 2018 NYFA/NYSCA Fellow in Choreography for&nbsp;Elsewhere, and the winner of the 2015 Gibney Dance Social Action Award and the 2019 Janet Arnold Award from the Society of Antiquaries of London.
Her work has been widely acclaimed, both nationally and internationally, with critics praising its power, precision, and emotional resonance. Reviews have appeared in publications including&nbsp;The New York Times&nbsp;(“captivating”) and the&nbsp;Los Angeles Times&nbsp;(“moves with the clockwork deliberation of a practiced Japanese Butoh artist”), to name just a few.

Written in 1904 at the request of&nbsp;W. B. Yeats&nbsp;for the Irish Literary Theatre (later the Abbey Theatre),&nbsp;John Bull's Other Island&nbsp;is a riotous high-action comedy! It remains Shaw's only play set in Ireland and is among his most comedic, insightful, romantic, and rarely seen works. Following the performance, audiences are invited to remain for a lively post-show discussion with artists and scholars exploring the play's historical context, its contemporary relevance, and the continuing dialogue surrounding Irish identity, diaspora, and cultural exchange.
This special event is presented as part of Gingold Theatrical Group's ongoing education and audience enrichment initiatives. For more than two decades, Gingold has used the works of&nbsp;George Bernard Shaw&nbsp;to spark conversation beyond the stage through public readings, community discussions, student engagement, and educational partnerships. Founded in 2006 by David Staller, GTG has carved a permanent niche for the work of George Bernard Shaw within the social and cultural life of New York City, and, through the Project Shaw reading series, made history in 2009 as the first company ever to present performances of every one of Shaw's 65 plays (including full-length works, one-acts and sketches). The American Irish Historical Society&nbsp;(AIHS) was founded in Boston in 1897 to document, commemorate, and interrogate the story of the Irish in America. In the years since, it has become a national center of scholarship, conversation, and culture. Amanda Selwyn Dance Studio offers “Choose Your Rate” Open Studio Classes in a variety of dance styles and techniques. These classes are designed for adults of all experience levels, fostering an inclusive environment to build skills, connection, and the joy of dance.

Collaborative Dance Composition Toolkit with Amanda Selwyn

Amanda Selwyn’s Collaborative Dance Toolkit Workshop will focus on two components of dance creation – phrase making and dance structures. First, Selwyn will guide participants through a series of functional exercises for creating focused and dynamic phrase work -- prompting efficient and clear choice making and specificity of space, time, and energy. These solo, partner, and group activities will harvest a collective movement vocabulary. The second half of the workshop will focus on working with the vocabulary to compose cohesive and resonant choreographic structures. We will experiment with spatial design, pattern, repetition, pathways, direction, dynamics, speed, order, and groupings. This workshop is for dancers, choreographers, and teaching artists of all levels interested in expanding and freeing up their creative process.
The Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre&nbsp;creates dynamic dance theatre that activates emotional expression. Through an interplay of athletic and articulate motion, they present theatrical and immediate works that engage audiences from start to finish and beckon a response of thought, feeling, and soul.

Amanda Selwyn’s Collaborative Dance Toolkit Workshop will focus on two components of dance creation – phrase making and dance structures. First, Selwyn will guide participants through a series of functional exercises for creating focused and dynamic phrase work -- prompting efficient and clear choice making and specificity of space, time, and energy. These solo, partner, and group activities will harvest a collective movement vocabulary. The second half of the workshop will focus on working with the vocabulary to compose cohesive and resonant choreographic structures. We will experiment with spatial design, pattern, repetition, pathways, direction, dynamics, speed, order, and groupings.
