UES Blaze Injures Firefighter, FDNY Says

A fire on the top floor of a five-story apartment building on Wednesday morning required 79 firefighters and medics.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A smoky fire broke out on the top floor of an Upper East Side apartment building on Wednesday morning, leaving one firefighter injured, the New York City Fire Department said.

According to the FDNY, the fire started inside the five-story building at 48 East 68th St., located between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue.

In total, 79 firefighters and medics were dispatched to the location and brought the blaze under control by 9:39 a.m. Wednesday, the FDNY said.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury during the operation and was taken to an area hospital for treatment, according to officials. Video posted on the Citizen app shows smoke billowing from the roof of the building.

No further details on the firefighter's condition were immediately available, the fire department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, authorities said.
