New Coast Guard Auxiliary Coxswain and Patrol Boat Enhance Boating Safety on Eastern Long Island

EAST MORICHES, N.Y. — The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Eastern Long Island Division is pleased to announce the qualification of a new Auxiliary Coxswain and the addition of a new operational patrol facility in East Moriches, strengthening the Auxiliary's ability to support recreational boating safety and Coast Guard missions throughout the region.

Andrew Tarantino, Division Commander for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Eastern Long Island Division, has successfully completed the rigorous training and qualification process required to earn certification as an Auxiliary Coxswain. Following evaluation by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Qualifications Team and approval by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, he is now authorized to operate Auxiliary patrol vessels in support of Coast Guard missions.

Becoming a qualified Coxswain requires extensive classroom instruction, practical on-the-water training, and demonstrated proficiency in seamanship, navigation, Rules of the Road, search and rescue procedures, communications, patrol operations, and aids to navigation. The qualification represents hundreds of hours of training and hands-on experience conducted to U.S. Coast Guard standards.

Mr. Tarantino's achievement coincides with the commissioning of a new Auxiliary operational facility based in East Moriches. The vessel will conduct safety patrols throughout Moriches Inlet, Moriches Bay, and surrounding waterways while supporting authorized U.S. Coast Guard missions. Patrols will include recreational boating safety operations, verification of federal aids to navigation, marine observation patrols, and other Coast Guard support activities.

The addition of both a newly qualified Coxswain and a new operational facility increases the Coast Guard Auxiliary's presence on Eastern Long Island and enhances its ability to assist the Coast Guard in promoting safe recreational boating throughout the busy boating season and beyond.

Boaters may see the Auxiliary vessel conducting routine patrols throughout the East Moriches and Shinnecock areas. Auxiliary crews work closely with the U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies to promote recreational boating safety while serving as a force multiplier for the Coast Guard's maritime safety, security, and stewardship missions.
