NYPD Officer Arrested For Drunk Driving On Brooklyn Street: Officials
An off-duty police officer was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Sunday in the South Slope area, police said.
BROOKLYN, NY — An off-duty NYPD officer was arrested and charged with drunk driving on a Brooklyn street this past weekend, police said.
Kenny Cortes, 28, was charged with driving while ability impaired, officials said. An NYPD spokesperson said the off-duty officer was pulled over at around 6 a.m. within the confines of the 72nd Precinct.
NYPD officials did not immediately provide any details about the arrest regarding why the off-duty officer was initially pulled over, where the traffic stop took place, or what level of intoxication was found by the arresting officers.

Officials said New York’s “driving while ability impaired by alcohol” (DWAI) offense—defined as having a blood alcohol content above 0.05 percent but below 0.07 percent, or showing other signs of impairment—can result in a $300 to $500 fine, up to 15 days in jail, and a 90-day license suspension.
According to NYPD records, Cortes has been on the force since 2023 and has made 48 total arrests.
