Centering Space

Founded in 2003, Centering Space is a peaceful, sacred space located on the shores of Lake Erie in the heart of Lakewood where anyone can come to center and listen for God’s voice in their heart. All are welcome — women and men of any faith or no faith. The regular prayer times and a wide variety of programs are meant to draw people to experience the space and find the peace and rest in which God can be heard. 
Centering Space accomplishes its mission by offering weekly prayer hours, both in person and on Zoom, as well as a variety of programs commensurate with their mission.
“We welcome professional people in the fields of religious studies, theology, prayer, spirituality; people who have experience, such as Michael Reiling who taught theology at St. Edward High School for decades, or who have written books, such as Kim Langley who leads our poetry sessions and has published a book on poetry and grief,” Nero said. “Other presenters include Pat Gibbons, a hospice trained grief therapist, and professors such as Wayne Simsic and Alan Kolp who bring decades of research to their presentations.”
Centering Space also offers plenty of contemplative programs, which invite participants to rest in the silence of the house. Nero offers day-long sabbath retreats, members of the community lead a 6-week Lenten program that includes silent meditation, and Prayer Leader Sharon Konkoly offers a contemplative felting class.
“Some people come for community,” said Kandiko. “Some come for quiet. Some come for a program and are surprised to discover community. They feel a sense of belonging.”
She also noted that Centering Space considers itself to be supplemental to a traditional church, not a replacement for it. 
“We are providing a way of encountering the God within ourselves in a way that is more difficult to find in a structured, traditional church,” she explained. “Traditional churches are good. We are not trying to attract anyone away from a church, but we are open to them finding further enrichment of their faith experience.”
Nero agreed. “We have people who are dedicated to their faith community. Our offerings enhance their personal prayer. But we also have people who have fallen away from a faith community. They take their spiritual life seriously and they enjoy praying in community. It’s inspiring.”
As Centering Space celebrates 20 years of serving the spiritual needs of men and women throughout the greater Cleveland area they have enhanced their outreach, by offering many programs on ZOOM as well as in person. People who are homebound, permanently or temporarily due to an illness or people from the east side or the Akron area who don’t want to make the drive due to time restrictions or inclement weather, now have easy access to many of the programs.
Centering Space has grown by word of mouth over the years. People who attend programs have often called the space “Lakewood’s best kept secret,” and return again and again bringing their friends.
