How Hair Stylists and Salons Can Get More Clients Without Relying Only on Instagram
After generating over 50+ leads in one month using Google, I want to share some insight on how I did it.
Many stylists and salons have been told that Instagram or social media is the best way to build a clientele. Posting daily photos, reels, and stories to capture audiences and build a brand. Don’t get me wrong, this does work, but in my experience there are much better client acquisition channels. With so many stylists and salons focused on social media marketing, many overlook the most powerful lead channel of all, Google.
In the past month, I’ve generated over 50 leads from Google alone using my website https://annashairstudio.com. This is because when clients are ready to buy, they go to Google. Searching phrases like “balayage near me”, “blonding near me”, or “hair extensions near me”. This is the most valuable traffic any company or individual can capture, as searchers are showing immediate demand.

This is one of the simplest and quickest ways to start capturing Google searchers. It doesn’t really take any tech skills to set up, and can be optimized in under an hour. This is where the majority of your Google clients will come from unless you run ads.
Here’s how to optimize it:

- Choose the most accurate primary category such as “hair salon” or “hairdresser”
- Add relevant secondary categories
- Add all your services with descriptions under the services section
- Upload all your products to the product section
- Upload high-quality photos consistently (at least once a week)
- Add pictures of exterior, interior, work, happy clients, and products
- Get reviews consistently, aim for at least two a week (this is really important for ranking higher and demonstrating credibility)
- If you can, set your hours to stay open longer. This can help with ranking during closing times
- Post updates, offers, and reviews regularly under the posts tab
- Make sure you fill out as much as you possibly can (including all attributes)
Build a High-Converting Website
Having a good website can make a world of difference when it comes to booking requests. A proper website makes you look established and credible. In this article, I won’t get into SEO, but even a simple 1-5 page website with a proper design will help a lot.
Important elements of the website:
- Clear call to actions
- Easy online booking form/contact info
- Clear service offerings
- Easy to read and scan
- A gallery page to show off work
- Content that answers client questions and objection
Including these elements will allow clients to quickly understand what services you offer and what makes you unique.
Consider Google Ads
For fast and powerful results, there is no better option than Google Ads. Even a modest budget of $100-$300 a month can generate 30-70 new leads with the proper optimization.
Google Ads can be somewhat difficult to set up and run, so I would recommend consulting with someone or asking a tech savvy relative to help.
Unlike social media ads that disrupt browsing, search ads appear at the exact moment someone is looking for a stylist or salon. This will lead to higher-quality, cheaper leads.
Diversify Your Marketing
Social media will always play an important role in marketing, however, combining this with Google will make you a force to be reckoned with. By focusing on both inspiration-driven platforms and intent-driven search, stylists and salons can build a more stable, reliable, and consistent pipeline.
Ultimately, the goal is not to replace instagram but to expand beyond it. Stylists and salons who invest in their Google visibility will no doubt discover new opportunities for growth and success.
