$267K Settlement Reached With Ex-Cheltenham Schools Superintendent

CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — The former superintendent who resigned after a high school football hazing scandal rocked the school district has received a goodbye gift.

Former Schools Superintendent Brian W. Scriven was getting a settlement of nearly $267,000 that was expected to be approved by the Cheltenham School Board at its meeting on Tuesday night.

Scriven would also receive payment for “earned but unused vacation leave, sick leave and personal leave,” according to settlement agreement details announced by the school district.

A week after 10 members of the Cheltenham High School football program were charged in two locker room hazing incidents, the district's embattled superintendent resigned.

Schools Superintendent Brian W. Scriven had served as superintendent years after graduating from Cheltenham High School.

Four Cheltenham High School football coaches and six players were charged last week in two locker room incidents where multiple players beat a sophomore player in August and September 2025, authorities said.

The charges stemmed from two alleged assaults of a football player that happened in the locker room and led to the eventual cancellation of two football seasons.

The separation agreement and general release is a settlement standard that follows Pennsylvania Public School Code, school officials said.

According to school district documents, the settlement covers the period of July 1 through June 30, 2031.

Scriven and the district have agreed that his employment should end and, in furtherance of that understanding, Scriven submitted a letter of resignation of his position as the Superintendent effective Aug. 6, which was accepted by the school board.

The seven=page agreement sets forth the terms formalizing settlement of any potential claims by Scriven and to comply with the requirements of his employment agreement.
