2 Main Line Golf Courses Among Best In Nation, Per New Ratings

One of the venues made the top 10 in Golfweek's annual rankings.

Two of the nation's top golf courses are on the Main Line, according to a new list.

Merion Golf Club's East Course placed seventh on Golfweek's rankings of the top 200 "classic" golf courses in the U.S., scoring 8.96 out of 10.

Philadelphia Country Club in Gladwyne ranked tied for 157th, scoring 6.77.

Golfweek — part of USA Today — defines classic courses as layouts that opened before 1960, when course architects interfered less with natural landscapes, according to the publication. Courses that opened afterwards are considered "modern."

Rankings are based on scores given by Golfweek's course-rating panel, which has hundreds of members continually evaluating each location.

Merion Golf Club has an East and West Course, with the East consistently rated among the nation's best.

The venue has hosted five men's U.S. Open Championships, most recently in 2013. The major is slated to return there in 2030, followed by the U.S. Women's Open in 2034.

The club will also host the U.S. Amateur Championship from Aug. 10-16. Related: Several Roads To Shut Down In For Amateur Golf Championship

Philadelphia Country Club will co-host the U.S. Amateur's stroke play rounds during the first two days of the championship.
