Central Bucks School District Responds To Friday Night's Teen Incident In Doylestown

DOYLESTOWN, PA — In the wake of Friday night's large scale teen disturbance in downtown Doylestown, the Central Bucks School District on Tuesday said it will be increasing police presence during and after athletic games at Central Bucks West.

In addition, Superintendent Joann Wexler said the district will continue to coordinate with local police regarding safety at school events and has directed its middle and high school administrators to reinforce expectations with students about appropriate behavior on and off campus during and after athletic events and other school activities.

On Friday night, the Central Bucks Regional Police Department reported numerous incidents in the borough, from disruptive behavior to fights and a possible assault, when more than 300 teens flooded into the downtown area following the CB West game.

"While the incidents occurred off school property and the district cannot verify how many of the individuals involved were CB students, reports from the Central Bucks Regional Police are concerning and do not reflect the expectations we have for our students or the values of our school community," said Wexler.

"We appreciate the police department’s efforts to keep our community and students safe, and we are in communication with our police partners to learn more about the incident."

In addition to arranging for the increased police presence at West, Wexler said the district is asking parents and guardians "to partner with us to reinforce behavioral expectations and responsibilities that come with the independence of attending football games. We want our students to enjoy evening events on our campuses and share in the school spirit of athletic competitions.

"However, students often attend these events without parental supervision and need to understand the expectations for their behavior before, during, and after an event," said Wexler. "To this end, we remind parents and guardians that middle school students must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please talk with your children about the importance of behaving safely and respectfully on and off school property."

Wexler added, "Our schools are part of our larger community, and maintaining a safe and respectful environment requires a shared commitment from our students, families, schools, and community partners. We appreciate your partnership in reinforcing these expectations, and we will do the same in our schools."
