HAVERFORD TOWNSHIP, PA — Merion Golf Club has been designated as the fourth U.S. Open Anchor Site by the United States Golf Association, cementing the historic Delaware County club's role as a host of major golf championships for decades to come.

According to the USGA, the designation will allow the organization and Merion to plan further in advance, invest in infrastructure and improve the experience for players, spectators and the surrounding community.

Merion — located in the Ardmore section of Haverford Township — is scheduled to host the men's U.S. Open three times in the next 25 years. The major tournament has drawn more than 200,000 fans in recent years.

The designation places Merion alongside Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina, Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania and Pebble Beach Golf Links in California as the only four U.S. Open Anchor Sites.

"Merion has long been one of the defining venues in championship golf," John Bodenhamer, the USGA's chief championships officer, said in a statement. "Its history, architecture and ability to consistently identify the game's greatest champions make it a place where every player dreams of winning."

The club's upcoming championship schedule includes:

  • 2030: U.S. Open
  • 2034: U.S. Women's Open
  • 2040: U.S. Open
  • 2046: U.S. Women's Open
  • 2050: U.S. Open

Merion has hosted five U.S. Opens and 20 USGA championships overall, more than any other golf club. It has also hosted a USGA championship in 13 consecutive decades, beginning with the U.S. Women's Amateur in 1904.

The most recent U.S. Open at Merion was held in 2013, when Justin Rose won his first major championship.
