New Details Revealed On Fatal Police Shooting Under Investigation In Delco

ALDAN, PA — As investigation continues into a last week's deadly police shooting in Delaware County, authorities released the identity of the man killed.

An Aldan Borough officer was in the area of South Clifton and Aldan avenues to perform a courtesy police escort early Aug. 6, authorities said. At the scene, he encountered Ugochukwu Ilodigwe.

An altercation arose, and Ilodigwe took out a knife, authorities said. The officer deployed a Taser but couldn't subdue him, so the officer fired their service weapon.

Ilodigwe, 23, was brought to Lankenau Medical Center in Montgomery County, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities haven't shared further details on the alleged altercation or what led to it at this time.

Dr. Janine Darby, the Montgomery County coroner, determined that Ilodigwe died from gunshot wounds in a manner of homicide.

"The classification of homicide is a medical determination for death certification purposes and does not indicate criminal intent or assign legal responsibility," Darby said in a statement.

The Delaware County District Attorney's Office is investigating the police shooting. The Office plans to announce developments in the case on Friday afternoon.

The involved officer has been moved to desk duty as the investigation plays out — in line with Aldan Borough's use-of-force policy — according to Borough officials. Their identity has not been released as of this writing.
