Young Bear Spotted In Towamencin

TOWAMENCIN, PA — A young black bear was spotted in Towamencin Township this week, and authorities said they are attempting to capture it.

The bear was spotted moving through the grass near Detweiler Road and Gehman Road.

Towamencin police are working with the Pennsylvania Game Commission to track the bear down.

They said they goal is to relocate the bear.

It's the latest among numerous bear sightings in the Philadelphia suburbs this spring, with an adult bear spotted in Hatfield on mid-May, and in West Vincent Township at the end of April. There's also been sightings in Bucks County.

While some of the sightings could be the same bear, the latest Towamencin sighting appears to be distinct, as the bear is smaller.

In the Hatfield incident, police described the bear as getting "a little too friendly."

The appearance of a bear in his native habitat should not warrant any concern on its own. But issues can arise if the bear becomes reliant upon humans, specifically human trash, as a food source. Residents are asked to be mindful about leaving pet food outdoors and leaving their trash unsecured.
