ROYERSFORD, PA — More than 35 years ago, Montgomery County resident John Curcio was working as a roofer when he fell off his ladder.

The fall caused severe damage to his spinal cord and made him partially paralyzed. The New Hanover man has been wheelchair bound ever since. But his accident only marked the beginning.

On March 11, Curcio will arm-bike 100 miles at the Spring Valley YMCA. He's doing it to raise funds for the Y, specifically money for free and discounted memberships, childcare, camp programs, and swim lessons.

Local residents are invited to watch. Or to bike alongside John.

"He credits the Y for saving his life and improving his health, and he even joined the Y staff to support others," organizers said. "John is now a familiar face to everyone at the Y, and when he’s not assisting members, you’ll find him on the arm bike nearly every day."

Arm bikes essentially switch the pedals of a bike from your feet to your hands. The stationary arm bike that Curcio will use March 11 requires significant arm, shoulder, core, and back strength to execute.

The event has a fundraising goal of $16,000. Donations from fans and attendees are welcome, but are not required.

A full schedule for the day is available online here. Curcio will begin riding at 8 a.m. and is expected to finish at around 5 p.m.

The Spring Valley YMCA is located on 19 W. Linfield-Trappe Road.
