Lower Moreland Parents Host Charity Event in Honor of Their Daughter

Lower Moreland residents Todd and Lisa Kupper went through something no parents should ever have to go through.

Celebrating their 10-year wedding anniversary, the Kupper’s suffered a cooking accident in their own home when their 4-year-old daughter suffered serious burns after she pulled a hot skillet of oil off the stove.

The physical damage was evident, but the emotional toll from the traumatic event was something the family was going to have to take day by day. 

“She was burned significantly on her leg and foot,” Lisa Kupper said. “Just the trauma of that and for the family, what we went through, it kind of opened our eyes to other children who have been burned and what their families go through.”

Realizing that other families are going through similar events, the Kupper’s decided to start a charity called Heal the Burn, who’s mission is to educate, support and care for those who have been affected by the physical and emotional trauma caused by burns.

Heal the Burn was founded in Dec. of 2010, and over the years it has grown into educational resource for families going through the same ordeal with their children as the Kupper’s. There have been fundraisers, educational videos on their web site, as well as the support a fellowship program at St. Christopher’s Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia dedicated to help serve burn victims.

On Friday, April 5, the Kupper’s will host their third annual fundraiser at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center in Bryn Athyn. It is a Magic and Comedy Show featuring Kupper’s husband, who will emcee the event.

“It gave us a venue to do a show,” Kupper siad. “He has a lot of friends who do magic. It’s a lot of fun. It’s not like a kid magic show, but it’s not inappropriate for kids. We get a lot of generous people and organizations give us things to auction off like sports stuff and gift cards. All the proceeds go to the fellowship position at St. Christopher’s Hospital.”

The Kupper’s have paid half of the yearly salary of $22,000 for the fellowship position through donations and fundraisers. They also sponsor burn victims to go to overnight camp that exclusively houses burn victims at Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp in Virginia.

“We met a lot of people who went through something like that,” Kupper said. “It’s something that you don’t realize how common it is. We were just parents who thought, lets just try and help other people. We basically gathered all our friends and family and said this is what we want to do.

Ticket prices for the show are $30 for adults, and $20 for kids under 12-years-old. The show will feature Guiness World Record Holder John Cassidy, Sideshow Comedy of Doc Swan, Mike Miller and Richie B.
