Strain-Counterstrain (SCS), also known as Positional Release Therapy (PRT), is a gentle manual therapy technique used by massage therapists, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals. It focuses on relieving pain and dysfunction in muscles and soft tissues by positioning the body in specific ways that ease tension and promote relaxation. The therapy is based on the concept that muscle pain can result from improper responses to strain. These improper responses cause tender points, or areas of hyper-irritability, within the muscle or surrounding tissue. During SCS, the therapist identifies these tender points and gently moves the body into a position where the tissue around the point is relaxed, reducing the strain on the affected muscle.

Strain-Counterstrain is a highly effective method for addressing soft tissue pain and dysfunction, particularly when other forms of therapy may be too intense. Its gentle nature makes it accessible to a broad range of clients, and the benefits in terms of pain relief, flexibility, and overall well-being are significant.
