Extreme Heat Changes Marple-Newtown Fourth Of July Parade

NEWTOWN, PA — The Marple Newtown Fourth of July Parade will shorten its route as the region faces what could be its hottest stretch in more than a decade.

Previously, the parade was set to travel from St. Albans Circle to the Broomall Fire House (1 N Malin Rd.) — a 2-mile route.

Instead, the parade will begin near its halfway point, at Radnor Drive and West Chester Pike.

An extreme heat warning for the Philadelphia area remains in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday (July 4). During that time, the heat index will reach 100 to 110 degrees each day, possibly peaking at 115 degrees at times, according to the National Weather Service's Philadelphia/Mount Holly Office.

"The intensity and length of the extreme heat will enhance impacts to both people and infrastructure," the NWS said Thursday. "This is not the kind of heat event we see every year, and could be the hottest period of weather the area has experienced in over a decade. The heat will be especially dangerous to the young, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations."

The NWS recommends canceling outdoor activities. But with two days until the Fourth of July, many Independence Day events are still set to proceed.

Those planning to attend events should monitor forecasts and check for cancelations or modifications.

Emergency officials advise people to stay hydrated during the period of intense heat.

"The conditions at the annual Marple Newtown Parade will be more challenging this year with this heat!" Newtown Emergency Management Coordinator Jean Bail said in a statement. "Start drinking non-alcoholic beverages now."

The Marple Newtown Fourth of July Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
