Delco Gets A Micro-Hospital As County's Health Care Losses Loom Large

Crozer's shutdown closed 2 hospitals last year, leaving many county residents without emergency care in their vicinity.

Regional health care giant ChristianaCare has opened a 10-bed "neighborhood" hospital in Aston — a Delaware County community impacted by Crozer Health's hospital closures.

ASTON, PA — Regional health care giant ChristianaCare has opened a 10-bed "neighborhood" hospital in Aston — a Delaware County community impacted by Crozer Health's hospital closures.

ChristianaCare is opening several micro-hospitals in southeastern Pennsylvania. The company's first in Pennsylvania opened last August in West Grove, while a third micro-hospital is expected to reach Springfield in fall 2027.

The Aston facility has 10 beds available for 24/7 emergency care. A second-floor outpatient center has an anticipated fall opening. Outpatient services are expected to include primary care, cardiology, cardiac diagnostics and imaging services.

"For too long, people in Delaware County have had to travel farther and wait longer for care," ChristianaCare CEO Dr. Janice Nevin said in a statement. "With the Aston Campus, we are bringing high-quality emergency and inpatient care closer to home — delivered with compassion, clinical excellence and a deep commitment to serving this community."

Southern Delaware County lost two hospitals after the bankruptcy of Prospect Medical Holdings — Crozer's Los Angeles-based parent company, which shut down Crozer as a result.

The shuttered hospitals — Crozer-Chester Medical Center and Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park — had about 600 combined beds. Crozer's hospitals in Drexel Hill and Springfield closed in prior years, so the combined loss has left many Delco residents without vital care in their vicinity.

New owners of the Crozer-Chester property plan to establish a hospital about 90 percent smaller than its predecessor. A new owner also purchased Taylor and Springfield hospitals, but specifics about reopening plans have not yet been released.

Meanwhile, ChristianaCare's expansion in southeastern Pennsylvania continues. Last year, the Delaware-headquartered company successfully bid $50.3 million for Crozer's outpatient facilities in Delco during Prospect's bankruptcy auction.

The ChristianaCare Aston Campus is located at 700 Turner Industrial Way.
