How Delco's Last 2 Hospitals Fared In The Latest U.S. News Ratings

U.S. News and World Report released its 2026-2027 Best Hospitals rankings on Tuesday, marking the 37th year of the influential list — and the first full year since two Delaware County hospitals permanently closed.

Just a few years ago, Delco had six hospitals. But four have shut down, including two last year, under the ownership of Prospect Medical Holdings — the California-based company that owned Crozer Health.

The shutdown's have made Pennsylvania's fifth most-populous county a desert for emergency care. And the county's last two hospitals — Riddle Hospital in Media and Mercy Fitzgerald in Darby — have seen an influx of patients as a result.

U.S. News evaluated hospitals based on nearly 40 categories of procedures and treatment of different conditions.

Here's how Delco's hospitals fared:

• Riddle Hospital: high-performing in three categories — back surgery (spinal fusion), hip replacement, and maternity care (uncomplicated pregnancy).
• Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital: high-performing in two categories — treating heart failure and stroke.

The rankings themselves only feature hospitals that were graded "high-performing" in at least eight categories. So only about 1 in 10 Pennsylvania hospitals are ranked, despite receiving ratings.
