In 1952 the Senate passed
“The President shall set aside and proclaim a suitable day each year, other than a Sunday, as a National Day of Prayer, on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals.”
In 1983 the first ever National Day of Prayer was held at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. with V. P. George H. W. Bush as one of the featured speakers.
In 1988 President Reagan signed the National Day of Prayer recognition into law.
The 2026 theme is “The Prayer at Valley Forge” in honor of our nation’s 250th birthday.
