Competitive Cyclists Injured In Crash During Philadelphia Cycling Classic

PHILADELPHIA — Two cyclists collided and sustained injuries in the Philadelphia Cycling Classic, a premier bicycle road race that returned Sunday after a 10-year hiatus.

Cyclists Ezra Caudell and Milan Menten crashed into each other on Kelly Drive, knocking Caudell unconscious, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Both competitors were brought to the hospital, and Caudell regained consciousness on the way there. The severity of their injuries wasn't immediately available.

"We are also closely monitoring two cyclists from the men’s race who were injured and required treatment at local hospitals," said Mayor Cherelle Parker. "City first responders, including our Fire Department, on-site medical personnel, and my leadership team responded immediately to the incident, and I am grateful for their service. My team and I are at the hospital now."

The Philadelphia Cycling Classic attracts professional competition from around the globe, taking cyclists through the city. The race's most notable stretch is the Manayunk Wall — a steep hill on Levering Avenue that draws thousands of spectators.

The race was revived this year after pausing in 2016.
