Philly Coffee Shop Ordered To Close After Inspectors Report Mouse Poop, Breeding Flies

Mouse droppings in the kitchen and flies breeding under the espresso machine were among the findings.

PHILADELPHIA — Health inspectors ordered a Philadelphia coffee shop to temporarily close this weekend after finding mouse droppings in the kitchen and flies breeding near the espresso machine.

Bluestone Lane, a chain of Australian-style cafés, was ordered Saturday to close its Walnut Street location until it passes re-inspection.

Philadelphia health officials reported six violations, including mouse droppings and flies in the kitchen and dishwashing areas. Flies were also observed breeding in the floor sink below the espresso machine.

The shop received poor inspections on Thursday and Friday and agreed to voluntarily close both days. The Philadelphia Health Department ordered Bluestone Lane to close after a follow-up inspection on Saturday.

"This inspection has revealed that the establishment is not in satisfactory compliance," the inspector wrote on Saturday. (See the report.)
