PHILADELPHIA, PA — Days after their sweep from the second round of the NBA playoffs, the Philadelphia 76ers have fired general manager Daryl Morey, the team announced late Tuesday night.

Head coach Nick Nurse, whose fate had often been tied in rumors to Morey, will retain his position.

The move comes after the Sixers failed to make any notable additions at this year's trade deadline, and in fact made a significant subtraction, sending away promising young guard Jared McCain to Oklahoma City.

That move, technically executed by Morey, was done so that the Sixers and their owners, Josh Harris and David Blitzer, could sneak under the luxury tax. While many blamed Morey for other moves in the recent tenure, ownership of the Sixers has reached catastrophic levels of unpopularity. A recent social media poll found that 97.5 percent of Sixers fans do not support Harris.

Morey, a former NBA executive of the year when he was in Houston, has been the architect of several key draft picks that have altered the trajectory of the franchise.

He selected Tyrese Maxey with the 20th overall pick in 2020. Maxey has turned into a superstar and one of the two or three best players out of that draft class.

McCain, selected 16th in 2024, was another success, and VJ Edgecombe, the third overall pick last year, was stunning in his rookie year.

While many will point to the poor contract decision he made with Paul George, who has struggled thus far in Philadelphia, Morey also inherited institutional issues when he arrived in 2020. The Ben Simmons saga was drawing to its climax. Embiid's injuries had just begun to worsen. And an ownership group that has made decisions to put profits before competitiveness was always outside of his control.

The Sixers have now made the playoffs in eight of the last nine years. Though they finally got past Boston this year in a major upset, 2026 marks the sixth time in those eight playoff years that they've been eliminated in the second round. They have not been to the eastern conference finals under Harris's ownership, since Allen Iverson and Larry Brown took them to a showdown with the Lakers in 2001.

Bob Myers, an executive within a Harris-Blitzer ownership group that also owns the NFL's Washington Commanders and NHL's New Jersey Devils, will lead the search for a new Sixers general manager.
