Prime Minister Of Ireland Coming To Delaware County

The Taoiseach of Ireland, Micheál Martin, is set to arrive this weekend.

RADNOR TOWNSHIP, PA — The prime minister of Ireland, the Taoiseach Micheál Martin, will visit Delaware County this weekend as part of an event at Villanova University.

Martin will speak about the "enduring ties between Ireland and the United States" at the school's Topper Theater. Numerous professors from Villanova's Center for Irish Studies, along with U.S. Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, will also speak.

“The Center for Irish Studies has built strong, reciprocal relationships with Ireland," the Center's director, Joseph Lennon, said in a statement. "Not only do our students have opportunities to travel abroad, but they also benefit from opportunities to hear from cultural and government leaders from Ireland right here on campus."

Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade announced a slew of diplomatic visits for mid-March, part of a global effort by Ireland to celebrate Irish culture worldwide.

Further details of Martin's visit to the Philadelphia area are not clear, although both the Irish government and Villanova noted the semiquincentennial.

"In the United States, 2026 will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence," the Department of Foreign Affairs said. "The St. Patrick’s Day programme will provide a timely opportunity to highlight the significant contribution of Irish people to the founding of the United States, as well as to its political, economic and social development over the past 250 years."

As Taoiseach, Martin is the head of Ireland's government, leading the Cabinet and determining policy.

Members of the public are invited to attend the Villanova event. Registration is required.
