Iconic Sandwich Returning For Rest Of Phillies Season

PHILADELPHIA — After more than a decade away, an iconic sandwich is returning for the rest of the Philadelphia Phillies' season, returning for Tuesday night's All-Star game.

McNally's Tavern in Chestnut Hill is bringing back "The Schmitter," the classic sandwich that will be served on the ballpark menu for the first time since 2015.

The iconic cheesesteak-salami sandwich, created and made famous by McNally's Tavern in Chestnut Hill, will once again be served inside the ballpark beginning with the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Philadelphia.

Originally served at Citizens Bank Park from 2004 through 2015, "The Schmitter" became a fan favorite after being introduced at the request of late Phillies Chairman David Montgomery, whose family lived near the tavern.

McNally's Tavern said "The Schmitter: is a one-of-a-kind sandwich that was the culinary creation of Hugh James McNally.

McNally pulled together the ingredients one night to make a meal for Dennis Krenich, aka Schmidter, because he only drank the local beer Schmidt's, according to the tavern's website.

The sandwich includes roast beef, salami, Swiss cheese, fried onions, tomato and a special sauce on a Kaiser roll.

The media once touted the sandwich as "the ultimate cheese steak" and "the planet's greatest sandwich."

The sandwich was also served at Lincoln Financial Field at Philadelphia Eagles games.
