River Road Warning Issued Due To Potential Flooding

YARDLEY / LOWER MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA —They've been down this road before.

With heavy rainfall overnight, Lower Makefield Township and Yardley Borough officials are warning residents to avoid River Road Monday night and Tuesday morning due to potential flooding.

Lower Makefield Township said late Monday morning that many roads in the area are closed due to downed trees or flooding, including Taylorsville Road north of Woodside Road.

Yardley Borough said it expects to close North Delaware Avenue. possibly later Monday and South Delaware Monday night.

"As you are aware we received a significant amount of rain yesterday into today," Yardley President Caroline Thompson said. "We anticipate having to close off North Delaware at East Afton later this afternoon and South Delaware at East College later this evening."

Thompson asked that residents in that area relocate their vehicles at their earliest possible convenience to safer higher ground. A few recommendations, Buttonwood Park or the Park and Ride (please check with any parking lot owners before you leave your cars) are suggested, she said.

Pennsbury School District has been notified as well, Thompson added.

"Be safe Yardley Borough, do not drive through any high water!" the council president said.

Rivermar residents are also advised to move their vehicles as roads in Rivermar will most likely be impacted.

At 3:15 a.m. Monday, the National Weather Service reported that the Delaware River was at 15.75 feet.

Lower Makefield Township officials were warning residents that river levels could reach flood stages following the rainfall on Sunday and Monday.

The National Weather Service has an action flood stage at 17 feet, a minor flood stage at 20 feet, and a moderate flood stage at 23 feet.

River Road (Route 32) has a history of flooding in the borough and the township, the latest stemming from flash flooding that hit the communities in mid-July.

River Road was closed for three days in mid-July after suffering flood damage. The flash flooding claimed the lives of seven people in nearby Upper Makefield Township.
