The question isn't just whether a child is old enough to spend an afternoon alone after school.
Rhode Island parents wondering when their children are old enough to stay home alone may find that the law doesn't offer a simple answer. A Florida mother's arrest after leaving her four children unsupervised during a five-day work trip has renewed questions about childhood independence and when leaving kids alone crosses the line into neglect.
The question isn't just whether a child is old enough to spend an afternoon alone after school. Does it matter if the child is watching younger siblings, or if the parent is away overnight? And how much independence is too much?
