New Rhode Island License Plate Celebrates Dominican Heritage

A new Rhode Island license will Dominican heritage, culture and identity.

"The Dominican Heritage Charity Plate is expected to feature important symbols of Dominican identity, including the official national coat of arms, the map of the island, and the red, white and blue colors of the Dominican flag," according to a media release from the Rhode Island General Assembly.

The law authorizing the new plate was introduced by state Rep. Grace Diaz, D-Providence, and state Sen. Ana B. Quezada, D-Providence.

Under the law establishing the new license plate, a portion of the plate fees distributed to the Dominican Independence and Heritage Award Committee of Rhode Island must be used for the benefit of state-based charitable organizations.

“This plate will be a permanent symbol of our history, our culture, our unity and our pride,” Diaz, the founder of DIHACRI, said in the release.

“It tells our children that they can be proud Americans while also honoring the Dominican heritage that helped shape who they are. Our identity transcends borders,” Diaz said.
