Rhode Island Among The Least Loud States In America: Study

Rhode Island has the distinction of being one of the least loud states in America, a recent study revealed.

The study, conducted by the researchers at Alpine Hearing Protection — "the experts in earmuffs and hearing protection for babies and children's hearing in noisy environments" — analyzed road, rail and aviation noise in the contiguous United States for 2022 and 2023, according to a media release.

Rhode Island turned out to be the third quietest state, louder than only Vermont and Connecticut.

Texas was the loudest state, followed by Nevada and California.

"In Texas, bigger is better, including fireworks, events, sports and even rodeos," the release said.

"One city in particular lives loudly, with Austin pinned as the 'Live Music Capital of the World,' with over 100 venues filling the city with the sound of music, festivals and events day and night," according to the release. "Sound travels fast in this flat state, whether from the construction of the ever-growing cities like Houston and Dallas or from the heavy reliance on cars and highways contributing to transport noise."

As for Connecticut — the quietest of the states — Alpine noted that it "consists of low-density areas with zoning laws that promote space, greenery, and quietness."

"The state has larger plots and fewer apartment blocks, which brings less neighbour noise too," the release said. "There are fewer major cities compared to other states like New York, which brings a chill vibe to Connecticut, which, combined with the coastal calm, dampens noise."
