West Nile Virus Turns Up In 4 More Rhode Island Towns

More West Nile virus was detected in four Rhode Island towns.

The virus was found in mosquito samples collected by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management in Newport, East Providence, Pawtucket, and Providence.

The samples were collected Sept. 8 and tested by the Rhode Island State Health Laboratories.

Rhode Island’s risk level for West Nile virus was elevated to high in July and remains high statewide, according to the department of environmental management.

West Nile is the main mosquito-borne disease in the United States, the department said in a media release, and there is no vaccine to prevent it.

About 20% of those infected with the virus "develop a fever and other symptoms," the release said.
