East Bay Community Action Program’s East Bay Family Health Care will host Newport County’s Back to School Celebration Event on Saturday, August 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 6 John Chafee Boulevard, Newport. The event is free and open to all Rhode Island residents. Students must be present to receive school supplies.
Several organizations will join East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) at the event to share information about available resources for children and families.EBCAP is partnering with the state-wide Back to School Celebration Committee to offer this event which is taking place simultaneously at 13 different locations across Rhode Island. It will feature free backpacks, school supplies, giveaways, and information for families.East Bay Family Health Care is presently accepting new patients at its health care facilities in Newport and East Providence that serve Newport County, Bristol County and East Providence, RI.
East Bay Community Action Program offers integrated health care including primary health care, behavioral health care, and dental care and a wide array of human services. Follow in the footsteps of Newport’s colonial-era Jewish community and discover where congregants lived, worked, and worshiped in the 1700s. 
This guided walking tour leads you through the historic Touro Synagogue neighborhood, bringing the synagogue’s rich history to life. The tour lasts approximately one hour. August Tour Schedule: Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday @ 11:00 a.m.
GUEST INFORMATION: •&nbsp;Tours are limited to 18 people. • Tour Fee is $18 per person • Reservations are requested • The tour fee is paid for in person at the Loeb Visitors Center via card or cash (no online payments). •&nbsp;Walks may be canceled without advance notice due to inclement weather.

Admissions fees to the Loeb Visitors Center's two floors of exhibits and the gift shop have been waived. We welcome donations and suggest a $5 per person.&nbsp;

Every summer, <a href="https://tsfnewport.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">TSF Newport</a> (formerly known as Touro Synagogue Foundation) hosts the George Washington Letter Reading, an event honoring our nation’s heritage of religious diversity and our history of the separation of church and state.&nbsp;&nbsp; George
 Washington’s 1790 letter to “To the Hebrew Congregation in Newport” was
 written after his first trip to Rhode Island as President. In his 
eloquent reply to a letter by Moses Seixas, warden of the local Jewish 
congregation, Washington attested to the new government’s commitment
 to freedom of religion, an entitlement he regarded as an “inherent 
natural right.” The federal government, Washington stated, “gives to 
bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance” — borrowing the 
now-famous phrase from Seixas’ letter that expressed their shared vision
 for America’s government. August 2026 marks the 79th reading of the famous letter. The
 event will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 16, at The Old Colony House, at the head of Washington Square in Newport. While in-person seating is limited, the event will
 be live-streamed, and all may attend virtually via a link on the TSF Newport Facebook page:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/TSFNewportRI" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">facebook.com/TSFNewportRI</a> 
The annual event has a long 
tradition of distinguished keynote speakers and letter readers, 
including Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan.&nbsp;&nbsp; Keith Stokes, Vice-Chair, TSF Newport, Associate Director of the Rhode Island Division of Equity, Diversity &amp; Inclusion, and&nbsp; Rhode Island's Historian Laureate, will read the Washington Letter. Sam Shamoon, a longtime TSF Newport board member, will read the letter to President Washington from Moses Seixas of 
Newport’s Hebrew Congregation, which inspired Washington’s famous 
response.

79th Annual George Washington Letter Reading: Honoring Religious Diversity

In partnership with the <a href="https://newportirishhistory.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Museum of Newport Irish History</a>, the <a href="https://fortadams.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Fort Adams Trust</a> will present a lecture on the Irish role in the American fight for independence at historic Fort Adams on Sunday, August 16. 
From Revolution to Ramparts: Irish and Irish-American Influence on the American Revolution and Fort Adams, featuring guest speaker Christian McBurney, will explore the often-overlooked role of Irish individuals in the American Revolution. 
Historian and author of ten books—six focused on the American Revolution—Christian McBurney is also publisher and editor-in-chief of <a href="https://smallstatebighistory.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Small State, Big History,</a> an online publication dedicated to Rhode Island’s rich history.
This free public event is made possible through a generous grant from the <a href="https://rhodeisland250.org/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Rhode Island Semiquincentennial Commission</a> (RI250).
Doors open at 4:00 p.m. for a cash-bar reception, followed by the lecture and Q&amp;A at 5:00 p.m. The event will be held under a tent, rain or shine, with ample free parking available.
