Virginia Man Charged With Newport Gun Attack Waives Extradition: Cops

NEWPORT, RI — A Virginia man charged with a gun attack in Park Holm that left two with bullet wounds to their "lower extremities" has waived extradition, police said.

Tyquan Johnson, 19, ill be brought to Rhode Island no later than Aug. 18 to face charges of felony assault with a firearm and discharging a firearm in a compact area.

Johnson was apprehended Wednesday morning in Newport News, Virginia, about 10 miles from where he resides in the town of Hampton, police said.

Johnson was arrested in connection with a July 19 shooting near the corner of Truman Street and Rosedale Avenue, according to police.

The night of the gun attack, officers responded to a report of shots fired and found the wounded parties, ages 22 and 25, police said.

"It was learned that Mr. Johnson may have fled to Virginia and the Rhode Island Violent Fugitive Task Force ... was contacted to assist in the search for him," according to a media release.

The task force "developed information that Mr. Johnson was at a residence in Newport News, Virginia," the release said.

A second suspect remains at large and the investigation is ongoing, according to the release.
