Pawtucket Man Sentenced To 10 Years For Crash That Killed Preschool Teacher

A Pawtucket man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a New Year's Day crash that claimed the life of a Providence preschool teacher.

In addition to his 10 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions, 47-year-old Gregory Miller was fined $5,000. Miller also lost his license for five years.

Miller pleaded no contest in April to charges of failure to stop after a crash resulting in death and driving to endanger resulting in death in connection with the wreck that killed Nanleomariz Albizu, 34, in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2022.

“The loss of Nanleomariz is an unthinkable tragedy that will forever impact her family, friends, and our community as a whole,” Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said in a media release.

“Nanleomariz was a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a preschool teacher who was universally loved and respected by those who knew her," Neronha said. "While nothing can bring Nanleomariz back, I hope that this significant sentence brings a sense of peace and closure to those who continue to grieve her loss."

The day of the crash Lincoln police officers responded to Cobble Hill Road to investigate a report of a rollover wreck, according to the release.

"Upon arriving at the scene, officers found that the driver of the vehicle, later identified as (Miller), had fled the scene," the release said. "Rescue personnel located Nanleomariz several yards away from the vehicle, unconscious and suffering from significant trauma to her head. Rescue personnel immediately transported Nanleomariz to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased."

Video surveillance footage from Bally’s Twin River Casino showed Miller and Albizu arriving and departing the casino in the vehicle involved in the crash, according to the release.

Miller surrendered to the Lincoln police two days after the crash, the release said.
