YWCA Names Winners of 19th Annual Golf Tournament

The YWCA in Woonsocket hasΒ announced the winners of its 19th AnnualΒ Golf TournamentΒ Sunday, July 21 at Foster CountryΒ Club. Β 

The first place women’s foursome included Jean Carlson, LietteΒ Lague, Jill Reeves and Jen Vinnitti. The first place co-ed foursomeΒ was Ed Duffy, Hank Latek, Celeste Costa, and John Figuirdo.

The β€œClosest to the Pin” winners were Cindy Pearson and Hank Latek.Β Kim Brown and Ed Duffy were awarded prizes for the longest drive.

The tournament is dedicated to Virginia β€œGini” Duarte, an elementaryΒ school teacher in the East Providence School Department who lost herΒ battle to breast cancer in 1994. Β  In addition to being an outstandingΒ athlete in basketball, softball, and golf, Duarte had an enrichingΒ career in athletics, coaching and officiating high school andΒ recreational sports.

Proceeds from the tournament support ENCORE+, a YWCA breast andΒ cervical cancer outreach program and the Gini Duarte MemorialΒ Scholarship.

The Gini Duarte Memorial Scholarship honors an East Providence HighΒ School senior female athlete who has continually demonstrated the trueΒ meaning of scholar-athlete by maintaining a high level of excellenceΒ in athletes and education. Β The 2013 recipient was Mary Monagle who
graduated 8th in her class from East Providence High School. She was
honored as 2nd Team All State, 1st Team All Division for Varsity
Volleyball and Β 2nd Team All Class, 1st Team All Division for Varsity
Basketball. She plans to attend Villanova University and study
nursing. She served as Class President and is a member of National
Honor Society.

ENCORE+ is a systematic approach to women’s health promotion, in
particular, breast and cervical cancer education. Β YWCA offers
community outreach, breast and cervical health education, linkage to
clinical screening services and assistance in accessing and navigating
diagnostic treatment services when necessary. Β Support during
diagnosis and treatment is also offered.
