About A Sharp Endless Need
Star point guard Mack Morris’s senior year of high school begins with twin cataclysms: the death of Mack’s father and the arrival of transfer student Liv Cooper. About Author 
Mac (Marisa) Crane is a former college basketball player and the author of I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself,&nbsp;a New York Times Editors’ Choice, Indie Next pick, and winner of a LAMBDA Literary Award. They have received fellowships from the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, American Short Fiction, and Vermont Studio Center, and their short work has appeared inLiterary Hub, The Sun, TriQuarterly, Prairie Schooner, Joyland,&nbsp;and elsewhere. Originally from Allentown, PA, they currently live in San Diego with their family.

Join us, JVP Boston, Palestinian Youth Movement, and Somerville for Palestine on Wednesday, April 22nd at 7:00pm for a conversation with authors Marilyn Hacker &amp; Deema K. Shehabi, as they discuss their poetry collaboration, Water to Water, in the call-and-response form of Renga. 

In 2009, prompted by the Israeli siege of Gaza, poets Marilyn Hacker and Deema Shehabi started a correspondence. It took the form of responding to each other's poems. They resumed their poetic dialogue by email after Israel launched its genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023.

Their project involved an alternate call and response between them in the tradition of the Japanese renga form, each poet picking up a word, phrase, or image from the poem preceding. The result is a fascinating poetic conversation. The two poetic voices are beautifully meshed together, so that it actually reads as one long poem.

The poetry is very rich in imagery, and these images stay with you, as do feelings the poems generate, for example, of unrest, of being in exile. Television and social media show you the pictures in the streets, this poetry takes you into the homes and minds of people. You can read it very much between the lines, and therefore it seems to speak to people about their own experiences.

Water to Water: Gaza Renga is a dignified celebration of humanity in and among atrocities. Although triggered by events in Gaza, it weaves in other conflicts past and present.

About the Authors
Marilyn Hacker&nbsp;is the author of twenty-one books of poems, including three collaborative books, and twenty-two collections of translations from the French. Over the course of her career, she has received numerous honors, including the National Book Award, the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation, the PEN/Voelcker Award, the Argana International Poetry Prize, and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. She served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, editor of&nbsp;The Kenyon Review, and editor of the French literary journal&nbsp;Siècle 21. She lives between Paris and New York.

Deema K. Shehabi is a Palestinian American poet and editor. She is the author of&nbsp;Thirteen Departures from the Moon&nbsp;and the co-editor&nbsp; (with Beau Beausoleil) of&nbsp;Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, for which she received NCBR’s recognition award. She is also the winner of the Nazim Hikmet Poetry Prize in 2018 and a recipient of Best of the Net nomination in 2021 as well as several Pushcart Prize nominations. Her poems have been widely published in literary journals and her work has been translated into Arabic, French, and Farsi.

About the Book

In 1932 Berlin, a trans man named Bertie and his friends spend carefree nights at the Eldorado Club, the epicenter of Berlin’s thriving queer community. An employee of the renowned Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld at the Institute of Sexual Science, Bertie works to improve queer rights in Germany and beyond. But everything changes when Hitler rises to power. The Institute is raided, the Eldorado is shuttered, and queer people are rounded up. Bertie barely escapes with his girlfriend, Sofie, to a nearby farm. There they take on the identities of an elderly couple and live for more than a decade in isolation.

In the final days of the war, with their freedom in sight, Bertie and Sofie find a young trans man collapsed on their property, still dressed in Holocaust prison clothes. They vow to protect him—not from the Nazis, but from the Allied forces who are arresting queer prisoners while liberating the rest of the country. Ironically, as the Allies’ vise grip closes on Bertie and his family, their only salvation is to flee to the United States.

Brimming with hope, resilience, and the enduring power of community, The Lilac People tells an extraordinary story inspired by real events and recovers an unknown moment of World War II and trans history.

About the Author
Milo Todd (he/him) is a Massachusetts Cultural Council grantee and a Lambda Literary Fellow. His work has appeared in Slice Magazine and elsewhere. He is co–editor in chief of Foglifter and teaches creative writing to queer and trans adults.

Join New Normal Comedy and All She Wrote Books for a night of smut and standup comedy! A lineup of Boston’s best and nerdiest comics who definitely think the book is better than the movie will be riffing about all things, smut, romance, and fan fic.

The night will begin with an hour of private shopping for ticket holders and conclude with a 90-minute standup comedy show packed with romance hot takes and Heated Rivalry references. Content will be adult-themed and discretion is advised.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to LUCE to help keep our immigrant neighbors safe.&nbsp;

Join [Working Title] for an evening of queer, literary speed dating at All She Wrote Books in collaboration with Sex Week Boston!
Join [Working Title] for an evening of queer, literary speed dating at All She Wrote Books. Facilitated by writers Zofia Provizer of T4T Readings and L Scully of Stone of Madness Press, this adults-only, ticketed evening event is for queer people of all relationship orientations and literary fandoms. The structure of the event will include introductions, timed speed dates, allotted group writing time to decompress and integrate prompts, and social time to mingle and buy books at the end.
Start to finish, the event will be about two and a half hours. Suggested ticket price is $10-$15, but no participants will be turned away for lack of funds and interested participants can contact [leighahscully@gmail.com] for a ticket waiver.
To respect the cozy, between-the-shelves vibe, there will not be food available during the event, but the bookstore is located centrally in Somerville with many snack and drink options nearby. The bookshop is small but wheelchair accessible, masks are optional, and there is a gender-neutral bathroom on site. All She Wrote Books is accessible by bus and T (green and orange line) with limited Somerville street parking.

About The Secret World Of Briar Rose
One hundred years have passed since the last heir of Gyldan fell into eternal slumber and doomed the once-mighty kingdom to poverty and invasion. At least, that’s what the fairy tales claim.&nbsp;

About the Author
Cindy Pham (she/her) is a queer Vietnamese-American author of fantasy books. Based in New York City, she works as a full-time designer while moonlighting as a fiction writer and content creator. Her YouTube channel, Read With Cindy, has amassed over half a million subscribers and focuses on books, movie reactions, and candid commentary. The Secret World of Briar Rose is her debut novel.

About the Speaker
Aislinn Brophy (she/they) is an actor, writer, and the author of Spells To Forget Us, How to Succeed in Witchcraft, and the forthcoming The Divinity Thieves (Spring 2027). She was born and raised in South Florida, but made her way up to the frigid northeast for college. Their hobbies include pawning off their baking on anybody nearby, doing funny voices, and dismantling the patriarchy. Aislinn has a degree in Theater, Dance &amp; Media, and her experiences as a performer consistently wiggle their way into her writing. In all aspects of her work as an artist, she is passionate about exploring identity and social justice issues.
