The Midnight Synth Pop Don’t say The Midnight didn’t warn you. After teasing fans on social media with ominous imagery, snippets of lush keyboard washes, and cryptic references to classic science fiction stories, the band that emerged over a decade ago out of Los Angeles returns with Syndicate, their fifth studio album (not even counting the three EPs released between) and their most ambitious and outward-looking work yet. Syndicate evolves The Midnight’s simultaneously retro and forward-looking sound while cementing the band’s status as perhaps the most musically and lyrically ambitious act to come out of the burgeoning synthwave scene.
With four singles already released from the 17-track album (“Shadowverse,” “Digital Dreams,” “Chariot,” and “Love is an Ocean,”) the listener can already get a sense of the wider canvas the band is painting with. “This is our ‘making peace with the apocalypse’ record,” says singer and lyricist Tyler Lyle.
And while Syndicate’s lyrics embrace the unsettled, sometimes paranoid side of the 1980s (few reminisces of the period focus on how preoccupied by nuclear war the eighties were) Lyle’s creative partner Tim McEwan brings undertones of anxiety and even doom to the lush synth washes and hooky yet unexpected chord progressions that fans of The Midnight have come to know and love.
The band was born in spring 2012 from the fortuitous meeting of two very different musical sensibilities. Atlanta-born Lyle emerged from the folk-inflected Georgia music scene that grew up around the legendary Eddie’s Attic live music venue. “I came to LA thinking I was gonna be the next Mumford and Sons,” Lyle laughs, recalling how he was put together with Danish songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tim McEwan in what he calls “a songwriters’ blind date.”
The two quickly discovered the overlap of their creative Venn diagram lay in the moody, synthesizer-driven sound that exploded in popularity in the wake of the cult thriller Drive and especially its enormously influential retro-1980s inspired soundtrack. But the new musical direction required a lot of adjustment from both men. “Up until then I’d been moving in more traditional pop circles,” recalls McEwan, “and I really had to unlearn those tendencies.”
For McEwan, this meant embracing his inner maximalist, using the maxim “If it feels like it’s over the top…add more!” And for Lyle, it meant moving away from narrative-driven lyrics and toward songs that relied more on imagery and pure mood. “I decided at some point that I’m not gonna tell a story,” says Lyle, “Instead, I’m gonna describe what the scenery is.”
The result is a listening experience that evokes in the listener Proustian sense memories of first loves and afternoons on the couch playing 8-bit video games while simultaneously feeling downright cinematic. In a genre sometimes derided for trafficking in easy nostalgia, The Midnight eschews putting air quotes around the DX7 solo of a 1980s radio hit in favor of washing over listeners and making them feel like they’re standing on a rainy street under neon inside a Michael Mann or a Tony Scott movie.
“I got into (mythologist and Hero With a Thousand Faces author) Joseph Campbell and (Swiss psychotherapist and author) Carl Jung in a big way and realized at some point that instead of just being a synth pop band we were building an entire world with all of these archetypes,” says Lyle. “We realized we were playing with the imagery of the ‘80s, but in the same way Springsteen did with midcentury America and factory work and such. That’s when it really became fun.”
Also notable in a scene more known for studio experimentation, The Midnight quickly emerged as an exciting live rock and roll band with a big and devoted young audience that grew completely outside the major label/radio airplay apparatus, scoring three number one singles on Billboard’s electronic music chart, playing major festivals, selling out massive headline tours, and co-headlining a 2024 run with Chromeo. “That always trips me out,” says McEwan. “When we first started playing live, I wondered who was gonna show up. Was it just going to be people over 35?”
But the burdens of building and sustaining that audience outside the corporate mainstream took their toll. McEwan recently withdrew from touring to focus on songwriting and studio work, while Lyle dealt with a family health crisis that sent his muse on a voyage into bleak and sunless lands. “I was spending a lot of time in doctors’ offices, and thinking about the larger world and are we living in the end of times?” Recalls Lyle. “But the truth is, all eight billion of our individual worlds will end — for each of us the apocalypse always comes.”

If Cacophony, Paris Paloma’s 2024 debut, was a window into her inner world, 2026’s follow-up, The Fatal Flaw, sees her turned inside-out, her heart laid bare. Through Paris’s lyricism, soaring vocals and cinematic production, she conducts a meticulous post-mortem of her own emotions, revelling in their gruesomeness and catharsis, and ultimately resolving to cherish them as evidence of humanity at its most sublime. This new chapter arrives after a defining breakthrough year: her platinum-certified single “Labour” has ignited a global feminist movement, generating over 750 million Spotify streams and more than 11 billion views across social media, soundtracking conversations from reproductive rights to anti–sexual violence advocacy, and establishing Paris as one of the most vital and articulate voices of her generation.
The album opens with “Miyazaki”, a defiant creative manifesto named after the legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. “I have something to say,” Paris declares, breaking the fourth wall as she introduces a record rooted in the unstoppable human need to create. That emotional landscape is as political as it is personal. “Good Girl”, a formidable alt-dance reckoning with the commodification of women’s bodies, sparked widespread conversation following her appearance on BBC Woman’s Hour, while “Good Boy” reframes feminism as a call for solidarity with men, rather than division, with a powerful introduction read by Emma Thompson.
The Fatal Flaw is inhabited by a cast of Paris’ great loves: romantic and platonic love, love for herself and for the natural world. But each of these relationships are intertwined with a fourth love, a constant love of art, one that provides the vocabulary needed to express the inexpressible. With its title drawn from the opening line of Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, and influences spanning J.W. Turner’s seascapes, the writing of Bell Hooks feminist theory and the romanticism of the Pre-Raphaelites, the record at its core is a belief in art as a living, breathing force - the thing that “changes the colour of the air that I breathe.”
This balance between intimacy and expansiveness defines Paris’ world. Her live shows have become communal rituals, where fans exchange fairy messages, books and moments of quiet connection. Following a sold-out UK and European arena tour supporting Florence + The Machine - with Florence Welch joining her on stage in Berlin - she now steps into her own era of scale, with her biggest headline tour to date across the UK, Europe and North America.
Beyond the stage, her voice continues to resonate across global culture, with performances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Later... with Jools Holland and The Kelly Clarkson Show, and acclaim from The New York Times, Rolling Stone and The Guardian. Paris has also contributed “The Rider” to The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, joining a lineage of artists whose voices have shaped the Tolkien universe.
Now, The Fatal Flaw starts a lineage of its own; an extraordinary collection of songs, an anthology from an artist at her most radically vulnerable, who urges us, in turn, to be brave enough to feel deeply. “I wanted to write these songs like they were for great walls, tapestries and heavy paintings, not just diaries,” declares Paris.
Susannah Joffe Indie Pop
Susannah Joffe is a Texas-raised, NYC-based artist making emotional indie pop that pulls equally from Austin’s soft-rock roots and NYC’s bright, chaotic queer scene. Over the last year, she’s become one of the most exciting rising names in indie music, growing to 2.2M monthly Spotify listeners, selling out headline shows in NYC, LA, and Austin, and building a fiercely online fanbase around songs that feel equally intimate, fiery, and devastating.
Her 2024 breakout single “Die Your Daughter” has surpassed 112M Spotify streams and exploded across TikTok with over 1.6M creates from fans. In June 2025, Susannah released her latest EP “Cult Leader” with lead singles gracing the cover of Spotify’s All New Indie and placements across New Music Friday, Lorem, Front Page Indie, Alternative Pride, Indie Pop, Women of Indie, and more.
Joffe will release her debut record this September through Broke Records - her most anticipated project yet. Most recent singles “Texas Baby” and “You Ruined Paris” have quickly become her fastest growing songs. The new music is more cinematic and expansive than ever, inspired by her hometown of Austin, Texas: the landscapes, the people, and the sounds that shaped her. Texas itself is full of contradictions—full of friction, full of oxymorons—and those tensions have seeped into every corner of the project.

Chicago-born and raised singer-songwriter Ravyn Lenae first started releasing music in the latter half of the 2010s with a trio of EPs, making the biggest splash with 2018’s Crush EP and its lead single “Sticky.” In 2022, Ravyn released HYPNOS, her critically acclaimed debut via Atlantic Records, with Steve Lacy, Monte Booker, and KAYTRANADA among its producers.
Her sophomore album, Bird’s Eye, was released in 2024 and garnered praise from numerous publications. Executive produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Dahi (Kendrick Lamar, SZA), Bird’s Eye is nestled within Ravyn’s memories of home, intertwining her vocals with pop, indie, reggae, jazz, and rock. She later made her late-night TV debut on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and joined KAYTRANADA and Channel Tres on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. DJ Shadow Dance For over 30 years, Josh Davis has expressed his passion, taste, and values through the music he creates as DJ Shadow. The name alone evokes a high watermark for instrumental hip-hop and composition. From his first masterpiece Endtroducing…, to the genre-hopping UNKLE release Psyence Fiction, to the otherworldly elegance of The Private Press and its iconic single “Six Days,” to his underrated Bay Area celebration The Outsider, his work in the ’90s and first decade of the 2000s is as essential as it is hard to pin down. In the 2010s, Shadow released the sprawling The Less You Know, the Better, with its muscular forays into rock music, and followed with The Mountain Will Fall and Our Pathetic Age, both ambitious, risk-taking albums that featured collaborations with Run the Jewels, Nas, and De La Soul, among others. Most recently, he returned with Action Adventure, an introspective and cinematic project that reaffirmed his singular approach to sound. If there’s a single red thread across this career, it’s his restless ear—always searching to rescue some forgotten gem from the dustbin of music history or a fresh blast of sound from the cutting edge. It’s a practice Shadow learned as a young boy, enamored with collecting comic books, baseball cards, 12-inch records, and precious songs captured to cassette from the radio airwaves late at night in northern California. With great seriousness and love, he describes the second-hand transistor AM radio on which he first heard Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message” when he was 10 years old, and his mind-expanding encounter with Public Enemy’s “Rebel Without a Pause” and that single’s howling saxophone blast. At the heart of DJ Shadow’s musical project is deep listening. “I’m always trying to please or impress the most advanced listener,” he says—the type of aficionado who respects the layers upon layers of synths that go into making a sound that can’t be readily identified but makes you want to share it with a friend and say, “This part right here.” Rightly or wrongly, DJ Shadow has never been one to follow anyone else’s musical wants or desires but his own. His career remains a testament to constant evolution, curiosity, and an enduring belief in the art of sound. ABOUT the Endtroducing Tour: You heard right: for the first time EVER, Shadow is going to be playing a set focusing solely on his groundbreaking 1996 debut album, Endtroducing….. He was ready to do it anyway, but the fact that Endtroducing is turning 30 years old made it a no-brainer.

We scroll past each other’s joy and grief before breakfast, absorb a day’s worth of tragedy by lunch, and still convince ourselves that the next notification might be the dopamine hit that’ll make us feel better. As much as some of us complain about smartphones — or, more specifically, what’s on said smartphones — distraction is the air we breathe. Social media, surveillance, endless updates and countless opinions, it all piles up until focus feels like a luxury item. For Thundercat, the clutter isn’t abstract. And on Distracted, his long-awaited fifth studio album, it’s the central theme of his life and art right now. “If you got an Instagram, you know exactly what I’m talking about,” he says matter-of-factly, half joking, half exhausted, when asked the impetus of the album’s title. Thundercat doesn’t frame distraction as a buzzword or a diagnosis; instead, he treats it like something omnipresent, something you deal with whether you like it or not. Distracted arrives six years after 2020’s It Is What It Is, an album shaped by grief, romantic heartbreak, and the sudden loss of his friend and collaborator Mac Miller. If that record felt like a long exhale after trauma, Distracted feels like the restless pacing that follows: the period when life keeps happening whether you’re ready or not. It’s laughing through the pain, using humor as an aid to deal with the BS.
