The Patient Looks Back: Portraits of My Therapist brings together a three-year body of work by Catskill-based painter Joyce Polance. Each portrait is based on a photograph taken during one of Polance’s monthly in-person therapy sessions.
Therapy usually directs attention toward the patient while the therapist remains comparatively opaque. In these paintings, Polance reverses that structure, making the therapist the subject of prolonged scrutiny. Likeness does not resolve the images; it increases the pressure between recognition, intimacy, and the limits of what looking can reveal.
Polance works in oil entirely with her fingers, building, pressing, and partially removing wet layers of color. The paintings move between precise observation and material disruption, allowing the face to remain recognizable without becoming fully knowable.
The exhibition is on view September 17–October 10, 2026, at the James W. Palmer III Gallery in the College Center at Vassar College.
An opening reception with the artist will be held Thursday, September 24, from 5:00–7:00 p.m. Polance will give an artist talk Saturday, October 3, from 4:00–5:00 p.m. The exhibition, reception, and artist talk are free and open to the public. No reservations or tickets are required.

The Patient Looks Back: Portraits of My Therapist—Solo Exhibition by Joyce Polance

A new discovery experiment just began a 10-year survey that will transform our understanding of the universe. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, named for the astronomer who found evidence for dark matter, uses the largest digital camera ever built, a fast telescope, and a sophisticated pipeline to document anything that changes in its view over time, from asteroids and comets in our solar system to variable stars, supernova explosions, and interstellar objects. Dr. Sandrine Thomas, Vera C. Rubin Observatory Associate Director for Summit Operation, will discuss the Observatory’s early results, its history and objectives, and the innovative system built to handle the tidal wave of data it produces.

Eliot Weinberger’s books of literary essays and poetry include An Elemental Thing, The Ghosts of Birds, Angels &amp; Saints, and The Life of Tu Fu. His political writings are collected in What I Heard About Iraq and What Happened Here: Bush Chronicles.
The author of a study of Chinese poetry translation, 19 Ways of Looking at Wang Wei, Weinberger is a translator of the poetry of Bei Dao and the editor of The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry. He was formerly the general editor of the series Calligrams: Writings from and on China and the literary editor of the Murty Classical Library of India.
Among his translations of Latin American poetry and prose are The Poems of Octavio Paz, Paz’s In Light of India, Jorge Luis Borges’s Seven Nights and Selected Non-Fictions, and Vicente Huidobro’s Altazor. His work has been translated into more than thirty languages.

Those of us who associate ancient Greece and Rome with sophisticated philosophy, high-minded political ideals, beautiful art and architecture, and profound literature, may feel outrage, dismay or contempt for the white supremacist activists who take inspiration from Classical Antiquity. But as <a href="https://www.vassar.edu/faculty/cudozier" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Curtis Dozier</a>, Associate Professor and Chair of <a href="https://www.vassar.edu/greek-and-roman-studies" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Greek and Roman Studies</a>, shows in The White Pedestal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate (Yale, 2026), it would be a mistake to dismiss or ignore the vision of history propagated by the world of “highbrow white nationalism.” Critical engagement with this movement’s thought leaders reveals the surprising and disturbing degree to which their vision of history has legitimized violent and oppressive politics not only among “extremists” but throughout American culture.

A talk by Anita Varma ’08 (Media Studies), Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media, University of Texas, Austin based on her 2026 Columbia University Press book Solidarity in Journalism, about journalism and social justice. The talk will explore how conventional journalistic norms discourage reporters from taking sides; journalists are supposed to remain neutral, impartial, and objective. Yet there is also a long tradition in journalism, dating back to the 1800s, that pursues truth by practicing solidarity for social justice. Solidarity in Journalism offers a bold defense of reporting for social justice, showing what journalistic solidarity looks like in principle and in practice.
