Children are invited to our weekly Wednesday program with stories and movement led by early childhood educator Debbie Leibowitz. Story Time A-Go-Go is a lively, interactive program for kids ages 1-4 years old held in the Event Center, or outside in the Courtyard depending on the weather.

Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest place on Earth, filled with geological marvels and remarkable wildlife. In celebration of Earth Day, join Road Scholar expert Nicole Flores for an introduction to this remote continent. Explore the secrets beneath its icy surface and its fascinating history. Meet the intrepid explorers who ventured into this harsh environment and the people who live and work there today. This lecture offers a vivid glimpse of what one might encounter when visiting this extraordinary frontier.
A viewing of the online lecture will be held in the Event Center at Abbot Public Library, followed by a discussion session.

Nicole Flores was born and raised in Chile. Her passion about her country and the region made her lead programs within South America since 1998, including several trips to Antarctica. Flores is a great natural storyteller, mastering this skill by learning from the best in Chile.

Earth Day Upcycling: Cardboard Creations for Kids

Meet members of the Swampscott Arts Association at a public reception on&nbsp;Wednesday, April 22 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.&nbsp;to enjoy their exhibit of art in different media!

The exhibit showcases a diverse collection of two-dimensional works, ranging from traditional and experimental photography to paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and gouache.

Founded in the 1940s as a small gathering of local creators, the Swampscott Arts Association has grown into a vibrant community of 60 artists and dedicated patrons. The association hosts multiple exhibitions annually and is honored to present this latest collection of talent within the Carten Gallery.

What happens in the brain during spiritual or religious practices and how might those changes matter as we age? In this Age Well lecture, neuroscientist Dr. Andrew B. Newberg explores the growing body of research linking spirituality, religion and brain function. Drawing on brain imaging and clinical studies, he examines how practices such as meditation, prayer and contemplation affect areas of the brain involved in emotion, self-awareness and cognition. The lecture will also consider the potential implications of these findings for health, emotional regulation and overall well-being later in life.

This lecture is part of the "Age Well" series, designed to provide valuable insights, expert guidance, and practical tools for navigating the aging journey with confidence. These programs explore key topics related to aging, from health and wellness to planning for the future, offering meaningful perspectives and resources for older adults and caregivers alike.
Andrew B. Newberg, M.D. is currently the research director at the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health and a professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine &amp; Nutritional Sciences, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Radiology at Thomas Jefferson University &amp; Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine and nuclear medicine, and is involved in “neurotheology,” the study of mystical and religious experiences. Dr. Newberg has published books and articles on brain function and imaging, and neurotheology.

Bring characters to life through personality traits, emotions, dialogue, and point of view! This three-week writing workshop series is designed to help students ages 8-12 strengthen their writing skills and enjoy the creative writing process. Each session will combine age-appropriate instruction with entertaining and engaging activities to reinforce core writing fundamentals.
Students will have the opportunity to practice developing narratives, work on sentence structure and word choice, and build confidence in their writing, all while enjoying the process of creating and sharing their own original work in a group setting.

Kenneth Garrett is a photographer specializing in the origin of civilization. He grew up in a world of photographers and spent his childhood traveling in Alaska, Canada, Mexico, and the continental United States. He knew from an early age that he wanted to be a photographer. After 46 years of working in photography for National Geographic on all seven continents, Garrett has honed his story-telling abilities while embracing the new possibilities that digital photography has enabled. Egypt is one of his main specialties.

On Monday, April 27, Abbot Public Library continues its Open Mic series, inviting the community to share their writings. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just starting out, this is a chance to connect with your community. You can prepare a short story or a nonfiction prose piece. At each gathering, we’ll welcome a featured reader, after which the mic will be open to the first 10 people who sign up. Readers are asked to keep readings to five minutes or less. Beverly Pierce will lead off the April session.
The Open Mic will be hosted by Claire Keyes, a celebrated poet and Professor Emerita at Salem State University. Light refreshments will be served following the readings.

The Marblehead Conservancy invites all members, friends, and others to its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. featuring a presentation on “The Secret Lives of Native Bees” by guest speaker Dr. Nick Dorian.
You’ve probably heard “Save The Bees!,” but do you know which bees need saving? In this talk, Dr. Nick Dorian explains why it's native bees, not honey bees, that deserve our attention. There are over 4,000 species of native bees in North America, and they come in every size, shape, and color you can imagine. Drawing on a decade of his own research, including pollinator surveys at Lead Mills Conservation Area, Dorian will reveal the secret lives of native bees and the intricate relationships they have with flowering plants and other insects. You’ll come away with clear action items for how ecologically-informed land stewardship can help these important pollinators.

Dr. Nick Dorian is a pollinator ecologist, consultant, and speaker. Through engaging and educational programs on pollinators and native plants, Dorian enchants audiences nationwide, helping people connect to nature starting in their backyards and gardens. As an award-winning consultant, Dorian brings science-backed insights to enhance green space for both people and pollinators. His work has been featured in leading academic journals, and in venues like USA Today, CBS News, The Boston Globe, and on the Tedx stage. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from Tufts University and is currently based in Orleans, Massachusetts.
This event is co-hosted by Abbot Public Library and Marblehead Conservancy.
