WHEELING, IL — The Wheeling Park District invites the community to celebrate life, honor loved ones and embrace Mexican cultural traditions at its annual Day of the Dead Family 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, October 25, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Heritage Park, located at 100 Community Blvd. in Wheeling.
This year’s theme, “Every Mile Carries a Story,” reflects the heart of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a Mexican tradition that honors the lives and memories of loved ones who have passed.

“Día de los Muertos is a beautiful reminder that the people we love continue to live on through our stories, our traditions and the memories we carry with us,” said Daniela Chávez Lira, Director of Public Relations at the Wheeling Park District. “Whether you’re running in memory of a loved one, walking with family or simply joining the experience, every participant has a story worth celebrating.”

Participants can look forward to a morning filled with activities and entertainment before and after the race, including face painting and performances by Aztec dancers, Wheeling High School’s Mariachi Los Gatos Salvajes and Ballet Folklórico Alegría Mexicana.

Jerry Riles of The Sports Rewind :60 will serve as the event’s emcee. The celebration will also feature traditional Mexican treats and local vendors. Los Comales of Niles is generously donating tamales and champurrado. Conchas will also be available courtesy of the Park District. Attendees can visit the vendor area to purchase refreshments from Citra House and baked goods from Dulze Vida Bakery.

The Wheeling Park District extends its gratitude to its sponsors whose support makes this celebration possible: American Family Insurance, Devoted Health Plans, Keller Williams’ The Bremer Team, Los Comales of Niles, State Farm® Veronica Roman, Unbroken Rehab Athletics, and Wheeling Bank & Trust.

More than a race, the event is a celebration of life, encouraging participants to embrace the holiday, remember the stories that connect generations and celebrate the lasting impact of those they hold dear. People are encouraged to register in advance to ensure a medal and runner’s bag.
