Exposed, Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre’s 27th Annual Performance Season, is an evening-length work that explores vulnerability, vision, and courage. The scenic design creates an ever-changing landscape of pathways, levels, and partitions that conceals, distorts, confounds, beckons, and demands resilience. The choreography traces a journey from fragmentation and restraint to openness and release, unfolding through fluid partnering, interconnected ensemble work, sweeping phrases, buoyant lifts, and soaring moments of suspension that embody trust and transformation. The Full Theatrical Premiere of&nbsp;Exposed&nbsp;will take place from March 11-13, 2027 at&nbsp;New York Live Arts.

The Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre&nbsp;creates dynamic dance theatre that activates emotional expression. Through an interplay of athletic and articulate motion, they present theatrical and immediate works that engage audiences from start to finish and beckon a response of thought, feeling, and soul.

House of the Redeemer

Gingold Theatrical Group (GTG) (David Staller, Artistic Director; Isaiah Josiah, Managing Producer) today announced&nbsp;Village Wooing, a special Salon Presentation of George Bernard Shaw’s sparkling romantic comedy. Newly adapted and directed by David Staller,&nbsp;Village Wooing&nbsp;will be presented at The House of the Redeemer (<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/7+East+95th+Street?entry=gmail&amp;source=g" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">7 East 95th Street</a>), a historic landmarked mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, for four performances only, October 22–25, 2026.
For this special engagement, GTG will present a new gender-neutral adaptation of Shaw’s text. The adaptation opens the roles—identified simply as “A” and “Z” in Shaw’s original—to performers of any gender, illuminating the play’s contemporary resonance while preserving the wit, intelligence, and emotional intricacy of Shaw’s language.
Written in 1933,&nbsp;Village Wooing&nbsp;is one of Shaw’s most intimate, romantic, and quietly profound late works. Two resolutely independent people, each determined to remain single, meet aboard a pleasure cruise. Their conversation—at first accidental, then increasingly irresistible—continues through two later encounters as argument becomes attraction and an unlikely courtship begins to take shape. This rarely seen play is filled with Shaw’s characteristic wit, intellectual combat, and emotional surprise.
“Village Wooing&nbsp;is Shaw at his most playful, intimate, and unexpectedly romantic,” said Artistic Director David Staller. “It is a delicious battle between two people who are certain they know exactly what they want—until they meet someone who makes them see the world in a completely different way. By opening the roles to actors of any gender, we can focus even more clearly on what makes the play so enduring: the exhilarating danger of allowing another person to change your life. And I can imagine no more inviting setting for this encounter than the beautifully atmospheric library of The House of the Redeemer.”
Casting for&nbsp;Village Wooing&nbsp;will be announced at a later date.
Village Wooing&nbsp;will be presented as a Salon Presentation: an intimate theatrical event inspired by the great literary salons, bringing exceptional performers and a small audience together in an elegant and unusually personal setting.
Proceeds from&nbsp;Village Wooing&nbsp;will directly support GTG’s continuing artistic programs, including its celebrated Project Shaw reading series, the Speakers’ Corner new-play development program, and its Off-Broadway productions.
The performance schedule is Thursday, October 22, through Saturday, October 24, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, October 25, at 3 p.m.
Tickets are now on sale at <a href="https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/village-wooing" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/village-wooing</a>. Through full productions, staged readings, new-play development, and educational programs, GTG uses Shaw’s humanist values to encourage open discussion, civic engagement, and social action.
GTG’s past Off-Broadway productions include&nbsp;Man and Superman&nbsp;(2012),&nbsp;You Never Can Tell&nbsp;(2013),&nbsp;Major Barbara&nbsp;(2014),&nbsp;Widowers’ Houses&nbsp;(2016),&nbsp;Heartbreak House&nbsp;(2018),&nbsp;Caesar &amp; Cleopatra&nbsp;(2019),&nbsp;Candida(2022),&nbsp;Arms and the Man&nbsp;(2023),&nbsp;The Devil’s Disciple&nbsp;(2024), and&nbsp;Pygmalion&nbsp;(2025).
Founded in 2006 by David Staller, GTG has established a distinctive place for the work of George Bernard Shaw within the social and cultural life of New York City. GTG brings together performers, writers, critics, students, academics, and the general public to explore theatrical works inspired by the humanitarian and activist values Shaw championed. With their extraordinary wit, passion, and provocative social vision, these plays continue to reveal Shaw as one of the theatre’s most inventive and incisive writers.

A narrator begins reading Claude Ponti’s beloved book,&nbsp;Mille secrets de poussins, but things don’t go as planned… Full of mischief, the&nbsp;poussins&nbsp;(chicks) have hidden themselves in the library and start popping out of the books to play tricks on him—especially Blaise, who wears a funny red mask.

Accompanied by animated videos and multimedia effects, the performer, who acts as both storyteller and puppeteer, leads the audience into a playful world. Designed for audiences 3 and up, the show draws on the playful, poetic, and bizarre questions and answers that fill Claude Ponti’s work. Everyone is invited to travel freely to the other side of the pages and discover the magical world of the chicks.
“Between high-tech ingenuity and pure poetic wonder, the company captures the whimsical essence of Claude Ponti’s world. A stunning sensory experience for all generations.”
—&nbsp;La Terrasse
Since 2003,&nbsp;Collectif Quatre Ailes&nbsp;has produced eleven stage and site-specific productions, establishing itself as a leading voice in contemporary visual and youth theater. Designed for audiences from age 3 to adulthood, the company’s work offers an innovative imagery-driven theater characterized by a sophisticated aesthetic and multi-layered dramaturgy that builds organic connections between generations.
At the core of its artistic process, the Collective deploys a hybrid language where video is poetically repurposed to become a living partner on stage. Through the lens of magical realism, its creations explore the “coming-of-age” journey and the power of imagination as an act of resistance. Each production, adapted from literary masterpieces (Murakami, Dickens, Walser, Maeterlinck, Supervielle) or iconic graphic novels and children’s books (Claude Ponti, Brian Selznick), serves as a vibrant invitation to rediscover literature.
Founded by Michaël Dusautoy (director and video artist) and Damien Saugeon (actor and acrobat), joined in 2005 by Annabelle Brunet (video and visual artist), the collective frequently collaborates with composer Nicolas Séguy, writer Frédéric Chevaux, and dramaturg Julie André.
Their productions have been presented across France’s most prestigious venues (National Dramatic Centers, National Stages) and internationally (Morocco, South Korea, Chile, Russia, Taiwan). Deeply committed to social engagement, the Collective leads extensive arts education and outreach programs within its local communities.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts&nbsp;will unveil a new student mural on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 6pm inthe main lobby of Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/250+Bedford+Park+Blvd+West,+Bronx,+New+York+10468?entry=gmail&amp;source=g" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">250 Bedford Park Blvd West, Bronx, New York 10468</a>. The evening will include a Halloween-themed cocktail party, with small bites and refreshments on offer.
In the spring of 2026, Lehman College Art Department professors and alumni Eric Ramirez (Design) and Ruth Rodriguez (Printmaking) led a collaborative project to develop a large-scale mural for the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA).
Building on the collaborative model established in Year One, students explored printmaking techniques including CMYK separations, typography and identity systems, site-specific design strategies, and collaborative workflows across disciplines. Through a combination of analog and digital processes, students developed multiple mural proposals designed as cohesive visual systems for architectural application.
The stunning mural was developed as part of a Lehman College class design project, further cementing the department's standing as an incubator for the next generation of design talent and expanding its creative footprint across Lehman’s campus. The mural stretches across the lobby wall with loose, energetic linework that gives every figure a sense of rhythm and movement, from the exaggerated fingers on the piano keys to the sinuous s-shape of the saxophone. The intense energy of the mural alerts the Center’s visitors to the magical excitement of the live performances to be seen on stage, just beyond the lobby doors. The palette chosen by the students, in consultation with Center staff, leans heavily on primary colors that pop. Background film reel details, theater lights, and musical instruments round out the composition, connecting the mural to the performing arts center's wide mix of music, theater, and film programming.
This project is generously supported by the Sara Little Turnbull Foundation, whose recurring gifts totaling more than $250,000 have helped transform Lehman’s design curriculum through scholarships, fellowships, cross-curricular coursework, and the Sara Little Turnbull Visiting Designer Speaker Series. Lehman Center for the Performing Arts has also provided funding support.
Since 2019, this partnership has brought new voices in design to the Bronx while supporting the next generation of creative talent at Lehman.
This mural project continues that legacy, expanding the creative footprint of the Art Department across campus and bringing student design work into Lehman’s public spaces.

Since its founding in 1980,&nbsp;Lehman Center for the Performing Arts&nbsp;has been deeply rooted in the cultural life of the Bronx. As the only theater of its size in the borough, with a capacity of more than 2,200 seats, Lehman Center provides Bronx residents with local, affordable access to high-quality live performances that entertain, educate, inspire, and celebrate the traditions of a multi-cultural community. In its 46-year tenure, The Center has been committed to bringing both local and national attention to historically underrepresented groups in the performing arts, such acts as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald in the 80s and 90s, to the Janelle Monae Super Bowl halftime show in 2011.&nbsp;Lehman Center serves the artistic needs of the community through four distinct programming series: “Punchline,” “First Curtain,” “Bronx Music,” and “The Discovery Series,”&nbsp;with specific focus&nbsp;on youth programming, comedy, the musical heritage of the Bronx, and exposure to wider global cultures. These longstanding traditions underscore Lehman Center’s historic role as one of the Bronx’s most important cultural institutions, dedicated to preserving and uplifting diverse artistic heritage for all.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Twenty-six years later, Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company continues the challenge. This October, they invite audiences to FRICTION, the company’s first full evening-length work in New York City since 2019, at Ailey Citigroup Theater, 405 W. 55th Street, New York, NY, 10019 on October 29 &amp; 30 at 7pm and October 31 at 3pm. Tickets are $38 general admission, $26 for students and children under 12, and are available at <a href="https://bit.ly/3Rs9GqR." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">bit.ly/3Rs9GqR.</a>
FRICTION: a dance exploring AI, humanity, and the sparks where tension, technology, and fractured relationships collide and ignite.
It prickles your skin. Pricks. Fastens. Adheres. Sticks. Is Stylized. Edgy. Of this moment. Fault Lines. Schisms. Chasms. Seismic action. Tectonic shifts. Land and people and minds. Tension. Fraying. Relationships. Relations to Self. Friction.
Friction is that moment a fire can start. It cannot start without. Neither intercourse. Neither love. Straddling the lines separating technology from humanity, a theme DGDC has portrayed since its first evening-length work, Plasma Field in 1999, through 2023’s e-Motion, investigating sentience in AI, ahead of the curve [Dance Magazine on e-Motion].
What’s the divide between artificial intelligence and real intelligence?
Daniel’s choreographic style was best articulated by dance critic Deborah Jowitt: “blending casualness with precision.” In FRICTION, Gwirtzman is pushing both the casualness and the precision to the max. In the group section “LARGE LANGUAGE MODEL,” which previewed June 25/26 at New York City Center’s IN THE STUDIOprogram, the dancers become bytes, pushing against their will, against their consciousness, executing dense, intricate movements at relentless speeds. The dance contains an archive of excerpts from dances in the Company’s repertory, pieces of dances torn up, recontextualized, fed to the machine and regurgitated.
FRICTION captures the tensions and tenor of our time, days before the midterm election, harnessing the fraught emotions that characterize our incivil society.

The score has been generated in full in collaboration with the large language model Claude. Daniel has used a range of additional programs to generate various voices, which mirror the thicket of data on display in the dance.
Dancers: Derek Crescenti, Daniel Gwirtzman, Sarah Hillmon, Vanessa Martínez de Baños, Johnny Mathews, and more to be announced.

ABOUT DANIEL GWIRTZMAN DANCE COMPANY
Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, known for its optimistic ethos, was formed in 1998. Since its inception, it has demonstrated a commitment to education, operating with the philosophy and programming that everyone can join the dance. Incorporating dance and story into the film medium has been a consistent practice along with creating original programming for the stage. The repertory has earned praise for its humor, musicality, stylistic diversity, and accessibility. The Company’s acclaimed creation, “Dance With Us,” a free online educational resource, received leadership support from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and is designed to demystify choreography and increase comfort viewing and speaking about dance. The digital resource showcases the Company’s decade-long practice working in the dance for camera genre. Lincoln Center and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts presented the Company in 2023 during its 25th Anniversary season in a stand-alone program called Everybody Can Dance. In the summer of 2024, DGDC was in residence at the American Dance Festival where it developed its newest evening-length dance, Flashpoint. In 2025, the Company’s AI-themed theater/dance work e-Motion, a collaboration with playwright Saviana Stanescu, made its NYC premiere at La MaMa during the La MaMa Moves! Festival, which Culturebot reviewed as “profoundly chilling,” noting Daniel’s performance as “masterful.” Also in 2025, Framing Ménerbes, a film created by the Company in Provence, premiered in France, followed by its US premiere at the Dolby Screening Room in Manhattan with guests Donald Byrd and Jovani Furlan leading the post-screening conversation. Since then, the film has screened in theaters in Upstate New York—Binghamton, Ithaca, and Rochester—and in Ann Arbor, MI and Vancouver, WA. The film will screen next in San Francisco at the Alliance Française in January 2027. Other highlights include performances at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Kennedy Center, Battery Dance Festival, Fire Island Dance Festival, Bryant Park, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. The Company’s robust summer 2026 season included two IN THE STUDIO programs at New York City Center along with a tour of its SUMMER MIX program to Ithaca, NY, with six performances at the Kitchen Theatre Company July 16-19, 2026: <a href="https://gwirtzmandance.org/summermix." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">gwirtzmandance.org/summermix.</a>

Don’t miss out on this frightfully fun day! Preregistration is encouraged. Walk-ups will be accommodated as possible.

What is a Chantey Sing?
Old-time sailors on long voyages spent months living together in close quarters with no outside entertainment, no new people to interact with, a monotonous diet, and each day pretty much just like the day before. How did they keep their spirits up? Singing together! Work songs and fun songs, story songs and nonsense songs, songs of nostalgia and songs of up-to-the-moment news—all were part of the repertoire onboard. At South Street Seaport Museum, the chantey tradition lives on.

Jefferson Lives!&nbsp;is Teatro Grattacielo’s first commissioned opera, created in collaboration with&nbsp;Polyhymnia, with music by&nbsp;Joshua Daniel Nichols, a libretto by&nbsp;Stefanos Koroneos, and concept and source material by&nbsp;James Harrigan. Receiving its world premiere as part of the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the opera examines the American Revolution not as distant or fixed history, but as a living human and psychological experience.
Through the ghostly presence of John Adams and a modern figure drawn unexpectedly into the past,&nbsp;Jefferson Lives!&nbsp;traces the movement of revolutionary ideas from private thought into public action, revealing the doubt, moral pressure, and personal consequence behind America’s struggle for independence.
The world premiere is paired with Puccini’s&nbsp;Suor Angelica, presented in a new production shaped by memory, absence, and the lives of women whose voices have been silenced. In this interpretation, Angelica is the only living presence in a convent inhabited by ghosts—women who once obeyed, loved, and surrendered parts of themselves within a system that demanded submission.
Together, the two operas explore freedom from opposite but connected perspectives:&nbsp;Jefferson Lives!&nbsp;considers liberty as a civic and political struggle, while&nbsp;Suor Angelica&nbsp;examines its deeply personal and spiritual cost. An empire tightening its control and a convent demanding obedience become parallel worlds in which individual conviction is tested against institutions far larger than the individual.
Jefferson Lives!&nbsp;and&nbsp;Suor Angelica&nbsp;will be presented together on November 7 and 8, with one intermission.

RUNNING TIME
Jefferson Lives!&nbsp;runs for approximately 50 minutes and is presented together with&nbsp;Suor Angelica, with one 20-minute intermission.
Total running time for the double bill is approximately&nbsp;2 hours and 15 minutes.
ACCESSIBILITY
The Flea and all Teatro Grattacielo productions are wheelchair accessible and disability-friendly. Please contact us in advance for any specific accommodation needs.
Director’s Statement
Rather than presenting history as a fixed narrative, the opera approaches the American Revolution as a living psychological and theatrical experience. John Adams appears as a ghost shaped by memory and moral burden, while a modern Narrator—an accidental protagonist—finds himself overtaken by the history he thought he only knew. Moving fluidly between dialogue, monologue, music, and silence, the work transforms documented events into a dramatic journey that traces how ideas of freedom and resistance migrate from thought into action. Jefferson Lives! invites audiences to encounter the Revolution not as a monument, but as an unresolved human reckoning.
<h3>About Polyhymnia</h3>
Polyhymnia is an interdisciplinary collective of scholars, composers, and artists dedicated to creating an unsafe space for the beautiful—a space where ideas challenge assumptions and where artistic and intellectual exploration can unfold freely.
They publish monographs, edited volumes, essays, peer-reviewed research, and original artistic work that examines the relationship between the arts, the humanities, and the American traditions of freedom and a dynamic cultural marketplace.
Through lectures, conferences, educational programs, podcasts, and seminars, Polyhymnia brings rigorous conversation about the fine arts, economics, politics, philosophy, and culture into the public square.
About Teatro Grattacielo
Teatro Grattacielo promotes the rich tradition of opera by commissioning new operas, revitalizing lesser-known works, and supporting emerging artists, making opera accessible to every corner of New York City and connecting with communities of all cultural, social, and economic experiences. The company presents fully staged productions alongside free community programming, giving living American composers a mainstage platform while welcoming new and diverse audiences into the world of opera through performances, education, and outreach across the city. Founded in 1994, Teatro Grattacielo has spent over three decades building on this mission, evolving from a company rooted in Italian Verismo repertoire into one dedicated to new works, reinvented old cannon, and the sustainability of the art form.

Co-founded by Iraq War veteran and choreographer Román Baca, Exit12 Dance Company began in 2007 as a way for him to process his military experience through dance. As a ballet dancer turned Marine, choreography became a means of healing—an expressive outlet to explore and share the invisible wounds of war.
Exit12’s full-length performance at John Jay College,&nbsp;Stories of War in Honor of Veterans Day,&nbsp;weaves together veteran storytelling with concert dance. The program takes the audience through the military experience, exploring war, the effects on family, homecoming, reintegration, and hope for the future. It will include a new piece developed with the John Jay College Veteran community – the College enrolls the most military-related students in the City University of New York system – and conclude with an audience talkback.&nbsp;

ABOUT EXIT12 DANCE COMPANY
Iraq War veteran and choreographer Roman Baca&nbsp;co-founded&nbsp;Exit12 Dance Company&nbsp;in 2007 to process his military experience through dance. His early works received critical acclaim and opened dialogue about the veteran experience.
After several of his platoon mates died by suicide in 2011, Baca saw the urgent need for others in the military community to access similar healing tools. Exit12 expanded to serve veterans, service members, and military families, honoring the diversity of experiences within the armed forces. The company developed a model that brings together individuals affected by war and guides them through writing and movement workshops to co-create public dance theater performances that reflect their stories, challenges, and hopes. Each performance is followed by facilitated discussions that deepen understanding between performers and audiences.
Since becoming a nonprofit in 2018, Exit12 has evolved from a small dance company into an internationally recognized organization advancing arts-based approaches to healing, dialogue, and cultural diplomacy. Rooted in our mission to use dance and storytelling to honor and explore the military experience, our programming meets the unique needs of the military-connected community while fostering inclusion and shared understanding.
Each year, Exit12 serves over 1,000 military-connected participants and reaches more than 5,000 audience members through public performances and livestreams. We conduct a minimum of 25 weeks of rehearsals with a core ensemble of seven professional dancers, creating new works inspired by stories of service in collaboration with participants.

Exit12 has served over 10,000 members of the military community and engaged more than 70,000 civilians through live events—and over a million through digital and print media—bridging the military-civilian divide and fostering empathy through art.

Mellon Foundation’s 2010 report, “We Make Do,”</a>&nbsp;which cited how destabilizing the shortage of affordable rehearsal space in New York City is to the dance sector. A successful pilot supporting residencies on four CUNY campuses in 2013 led to CDI’s formal launch in 2014. Since then, CDI has become a key player in New York City’s performing arts ecosystem, leading a consortium of 14 CUNY colleges and four arts organizations to host 20+ residencies for NYC choreographers and dance companies each year. Over the past 12 years, CDI has granted 300 residencies to emerging and established choreographers, providing invaluable resources to artists, while enhancing CUNY students’ education and cultural experiences.
The CUNY Dance Initiative receives major support from The Howard Gilman Foundation, The George S. Kaufman Charitable Foundation, and The Mertz Gilmore Foundation. Additional support is provided by the SHS Foundation, The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, and the Harkness Foundation for Dance.

In its 46-year tenure, The Center has been committed to bringing both local and national attention to historically underrepresented groups in the performing arts, such acts as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald in the 80s and 90s, to the Janelle Monae Super Bowl halftime show in 2011.&nbsp;Lehman Center serves the artistic needs of the community through four distinct programming series: “Punchline,” “First Curtain,” “Bronx Music,” and “The Discovery Series,”&nbsp;with a specific focus&nbsp;on youth programming, comedy, the musical heritage of the Bronx, and exposure to wider global cultures. These longstanding traditions underscore Lehman Center’s historic role as one of the Bronx’s most important cultural institutions, dedicated to preserving and uplifting diverse artistic heritage for all.
Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. is supported, in part, by public funds through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council and the Bronx Delegation.&nbsp;
Additional funding is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with support from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. We are thrilled to share that Goya Foods has agreed to renew their sponsorship for this season, which will help Lehman Center expand our reach to the community.&nbsp;
In addition, we have secured funding from the Howard Gilman Foundation to help grow our programming. The 2026-2027 season is also made possible through sponsorships by Con Edison, Havana Café, Friends of Lehman Center, and our cherished audience members.

Schools interested in visiting the exhibition should email&nbsp;<a href="mailto:education@seany.org" target="_blank">education@seany.org</a>.
Highlights include a rare&nbsp;1776 broadside of the Declaration of Independence; an early&nbsp;1789 printing of the Bill of Rights, owned by one of the Representatives who helped shape it during the First Federal Congress; and more recent treasures such as an advance copy of&nbsp;Martin Luther King, Jr.’s "I have a dream" speech from his 1963 “March on Washington” remarks.
To give more students the opportunity to experience these extraordinary documents, the Seaport Museum is offering its specially developed educational program,&nbsp; The Power of the Page, free to all New York City schools. Schools should email&nbsp;<a href="mailto:education@seany.org" target="_blank">education@seany.org</a>&nbsp;to schedule a visit or inquire about bringing the program to their students.
“This experience was absolutely superb. I took my students to their exhibit on Liberty; however, the whole staff and educators were amazing. They took the time to educate my students and as I always say, I learn something new every day.” said&nbsp;Michael Agovino, Educator at Queens Gateway to Health Sciences Secondary School. Agovino continued, “The way [the museum educator] spoke to our students and broke down complex ideas pertaining to the Museum was perfect. We were so fortunate to bring our students here. A MUST SEE in a beautiful part of Manhattan. So historical, so cool!”

The Promise of Liberty: Words That Shaped a Nation Exhibition
On View Wednesday–Sunday | Free with General Admission
Come experience this full-floor exhibition to journey through the nation’s founding ideas—tracing how they have evolved over time through rare defining documents and pivotal moments in history. As you explore the fascinating and unique exhibition, you will see how this promise—established in 1776—was never fully realized and remains an aspiration we continue to pursue today.
Throughout the gallery, you will encounter some of the nation’s most iconic 18th&nbsp;century documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Alongside these are exceptional handwritten pages from an undelivered inaugural address by George Washington, as well as remarkable 19th and 20th&nbsp;century treasures such as the Emancipation Proclamation and an advance copy of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “March on Washington” speech. In it, King describes the Declaration of Independence and Constitution as “a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.” Together, these extraordinary artifacts reveal how the pursuit of freedom has been redefined across generations.
Through rarely-seen documents and ephemera, you will discover pivotal moments that pushed the nation closer to equality—from the fight for religious freedom and the abolition of slavery to the movement for women’s suffrage. This exhibition offers the unique opportunity to experience the ongoing story of a nation shaped by words—where ideals have been tested, expanded, and reimagined over centuries.

In 1940, dancer Syvilla Fort asked John Cage to compose an African-inflected work,&nbsp;Bacchanale, to be premiered at the Cornish School in Seattle. With no room on stage for a percussion ensemble, Cage slipped screws, bolts, and weatherstripping between the strings of a grand piano, and the prepared piano was born.
The company will also perform excerpts from&nbsp;IN￨REP: Introspection, a Bessie Award–nominated retrospective that spans its first two decades in a single composition. Bell calls it “a tapestry of the past with hints of the future.” It premiered at Gibney in October 2022 and earned Bell a 2023 Bessie nomination for Outstanding Choreographer.
This production has been made possible with funding from the John Cage Trust, New York State Council on the Arts, Danse Mirage Foundation, and Kaatsbaan Cultural Park.

Is “Therapy Speak” Getting in the Way of Talking with Your Daughter?
ADHD. OCD. Toxic. Unwell. Today’s tween and teen girls are growing up surrounded by mental health language, much of it absorbed through TikTok, Instagram, and other online spaces. While this vocabulary can help girls express what they are experiencing, it can also shape how they see themselves and make honest conversations with parents more complicated.
Over the past decade, psychiatrist Suzanne Garfinkle-Crowell has seen a growing number of girls arrive in her office with long lists of self-applied diagnoses. She has also watched concerned parents struggle to respond, sometimes with alarm and sometimes with skepticism, unintentionally widening the communication gap with their daughters.
Join us for a timely and engaging conversation based on Dr. Garfinkle-Crowell’s book, Girlhood, Translated. She will help parents better understand the language girls are using, look beyond labels, and respond in ways that foster openness, resilience, and connection.
Discover how parents can help girls move from feeling defined by what is “wrong” with them to feeling confident in who they are and empowered to shape who they will become. This conversation offers a hopeful new way to talk about mental health, one that encourages girls not only to heal, but to thrive.
The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of Girlhood, Translated.

Don't miss this unique&nbsp; and wonderful operatic work first performed 100 years ago and recently rediscovered. In honor of the 800th anniversary of St. Francis, patron saint of animals, nature and peace, Canterbury Choral Society will perform the Oratorio this Sunday October 25th with professional soloists, chorus and full orchestra. One performance only! Popular Tenor Blake Friedman sings the part of St. Francis.
&nbsp; In 1916 The American Press described the work as "sublime, with passages of extraordinary beauty". Canterbury conductor Jonathan De Vries confirmed&nbsp;"This is a beautiful work in the Italian operatic tradition, very lyrical, with moving arias and choral interludes." First performed in October 1916 by the Metropolitan Opera at Carnegie Hall, the Oratorio was lost until 2006. Tickets are $35, booked in advance through Eventbrite.com or $40 cash at the door. For more information about this unique work and the story of how it was rediscovered go to www.canterburychoral.org.

See the history and hear the stories of the many lives and transformations of this beautiful Manhattan neighborhood.
We will spend two hours exploring the historic neighborhood of Turtle Bay. From the site of the original bay and why it was named for Turtles, we will see how the area transitioned from bucolic Loyalist farms to a smelly industrial center to a gentrified swanky home of celebrities to the international center it is today.
The tour covers about 1.7 miles of walking and covers an area from East 47th Street to East 54th Street between the East River and Third Avenue. I will point out a variety of celebrity homes, street murals, and historic sites.

Zankel Hall

Experience a remarkable musical rediscovery at Carnegie Hall.
On Thursday, November 12 at 7:30 PM, Jason Tramm and the MidAtlantic Philharmonic Orchestra present the world premiere of Teodor Doré’s new orchestration of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Suite in D Minor.
Composed in 1891 while Rachmaninoff was a student at the Moscow Conservatory, the Suite survives through a piano manuscript; its original orchestral score remains missing. Doré’s new orchestration, created with the endorsement of the Rachmaninoff family, offers a rare opportunity to hear this early work brought to life by a full orchestra.
Presented by Renaissance-21, the evening celebrates the movement’s American launch with a program combining classical favorites and contemporary premieres, including Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Rachmaninoff’s beloved Vocalise.
Tramm returns for his third Carnegie Hall performance, joined by guest conductor Olsi Qinami and an international roster of featured artists.
Join us for an evening of musical discovery in Zankel Hall.
