MAN WOMAN is a Butoh work by Vangeline that revisits the iconic photographic series Man and Woman by Eikoh Hosoe through a contemporary feminist lens. With fantastical costumes by Machine Dazzle, a visionary queer artist, and a richly textured electro-acoustic score by Ray Barragan-Sweeten, this 21st-century reimagining centers the female body as sole author and performer. Women have historically been positioned as mirror or muse in relation to a male counterpart. MAN WOMAN playfully examines how a female body navigates, adapts to, and ultimately exits this male-dominated system. It remains in dialogue with its original conceptual framework while asserting a decisive shift: the female body is no longer responding to history — it is writing it.
Vangeline is a New York–based teacher, choreographer, and dancer specializing in Japanese Butoh. She is the artistic director of Vangeline Theater/New York Butoh Institute and is widely recognized for a rigorous, research-driven approach that expands Butoh’s relevance in the 21st century. Through her all-female company, her work unites Butoh with social engagement and activism, centering historically marginalized voices. She is the founder of the New York Butoh Institute Festival, Queer Butoh, and The Dream a Dream Project, an award-winning program bringing Butoh to incarcerated individuals. Her work has been presented internationally. She is the author of Butoh: Cradling Empty Space and recipient of a 2022 and 2026 NEA Dance Awards.

Ray Barragan-Sweeten (b. 1975) is a visual artist &amp; sound maker based in New York and Rhode Island. He has performed and screened works at Moma/PS1, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, New York Film Festival, Anthology Film Archive, Issue Project Room, Participant Gallery, Microscope Gallery, The Kitchen, Roulette, and toured throughout Europe as a member of Fabrica Musica. He has released music as f13 on Beige Records as The Mitgang Audio on Suction Records. In 2010 he co-founded DataSpaceTime with visual artist Lisa Gwilliam and has exhibited, performed, and screened works at Centre Pompidou, Parish Museum, City Center NY, Microscope Gallery, AS220, Next Festival at BAM, Florida Atlantic University, and Cica Museum. He has taught at Guggenheim Museum and was guest artist faculty at Sarah Lawrence with L. Gwilliam. Machine Dazzle is a beloved downtown bon vivant and creative provocateur whose work spans costume, set design, performance, music, and visual art. Based in New York since 1994, he is known for intricate, unconventional wearable art and immersive environments that blur boundaries between fashion, sculpture, and theater. His collaborators include Taylor Mac, Julie Atlas Muz, Big Art Group, Mx. Justin Vivian Bond, Basil Twist, Pig Iron Theatre Company, Opera Philadelphia, Spiegelworld, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His designs were featured in Taylor Mac’s Pulitzer Prize–nominated A 24-Decade History of Popular Music, later adapted into an HBO documentary. Machine is a 2017 Bessie Award recipient, a 2022 United States Artists Fellow, a 2024 Emmy Award winner, and delivered a TED Talk in 2023. His solo exhibition Queer Maximalism x Machine Dazzledebuted at MAD NYC.

Using tap dance, live music, and spoken word, Gerson Lanza creates a compelling journey through the intersecting themes of race, ethnicity, and immigration. An immersive dance performance that celebrates the essence of authenticity in rhythm, To Dance Is To Be Free fuses art and advocacy to foster a deeper understanding of the multifaceted tapestry of Blackness and American society at large.

Originally from La Ceiba, Honduras, Gerson Lanza first encountered tap dance after moving to New York City in 2001. He immediately fell in love with the art form, and began training at Wadleigh School for the Performing and Visual Arts and the Harlem School of the Arts. With Music From The Sole, led by Leonardo Sandoval and Gregory Richardson, he has participated in residencies at Lincoln Center, Jacob’s Pillow, Works &amp; Process at The Guggenheim, and Fall for Dance Festival at New York City Center. In his own right he has been featured as a Strathmore College Amplify Artist and Artist-in-Residence, selected as a NYDance Lab Onebeat Fellow, and featured in “Artist at the Center” at New York City Center, curated by Ayodele Casel, which landed his first New York Times review for his choreographic work. He also headlined the Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center with his jazz quintet.
Lanza received his Master in Fine Arts (MFA) from The University of Maryland, where he focused on the Afro-Latinx diaspora. His research landed him the International Program for Creative Collaboration &amp; Research Grant to study the relation of the African diaspora in Honduras and Spain through the lens of tap dance. Gerson has also served as a consultant and presenter for 92 Street Y's newest curriculum, "Tracing Footsteps, " taught by performing arts educators in New York City.

Since then, CDI has become a key player in New York City’s performing arts ecosystem, leading a consortium of 14 CUNY colleges and four arts organizations to host 20+ residencies for NYC choreographers and dance companies each year. In the past 11 years, CDI has granted 275 residencies to emerging and established choreographers, providing invaluable resources to artists, while enhancing CUNY students’ education and cultural experiences.
The CUNY Dance Initiative receives major support from The Mertz Gilmore Foundation and Howard Gilman Foundation. Additional support is provided by the SHS Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund’s Charles E. Leonard Davis Center for the Performing Arts, located at The City College of New York, serves as a cultural hub that builds a sense of community both within the school and its surrounding neighborhood, while inspiring creativity and diversity. Here NOW So Long is the third chapter in Young Soon Kim’s acclaimed Here NOW series, which toured Korea in Seoul, Gwangju, and Seongnam in 2012. The fourth and final chapter, Eternal NOW, premiered at BAM Fisherin 2014.

The current version of Here NOW So Long runs approximately 48 minutes, with additional sections in development. The completed work will be a 70-minute evening-length piece without intermission.
This utterly compelling multimedia dance-theater work is marked by remarkable versatility and choreographic virtuosity of Young Soon Kim. Here NOW So Long explores the turbulence of human emotion through 12 vivid scenes, weaving together panoramic video imagery, a live performance of an original score of guitars and electronics, and the fluid, dramatic movement of WHITE WAVE’s stunning dancers. The work extends and breaks the boundaries of contemporary dance with themes of love, longing, and inner conflict.

For decades, Kim has been recognized as a pioneer of this movement, bringing Korean artistry into a dynamic dialogue with the international dance community.
Since its founding, WHITE WAVE has appeared on major stages throughout the United States, Europe, and East Asia, including the National Theater of Seoul, National Theater of Taipei, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the 1988 Summer Olympics World Dance Festival, SIDance Festival, Arko Theater, Sungnam Arts Center, and the Asian Cultural Center for the Opening Celebration of the 2019 FINA World Championship Masters’ Games. In North America, the company has performed at BAM Fisher, Dance Theater Workshop’s Bessie Schönberg Theater, La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival, Ailey Citigroup Theater, Vancouver International Dance Festival, and New York’s SummerStage. Most recently, WHITE WAVE received enthusiastic acclaim at the 2025 Mostra Internacional de Dança de São Paulo in Brazil and the ChangMu International Dance Festival in Seoul.
The company’s work has been widely featured in the media, including WWOR-TV, Fox 5’s Good Day New York, PBS’s NYC-ARTS, and CNN’s Inside Asia. Honors include a 2025 ITI Award nomination, the 2023 Bessies Angel Honoree Award, and a nomination for the KBS Global Korean Award. Kim’s work has also been highlighted in the documentary Arirang, which premiered at the Smithsonian Institution and aired on PBS.
A landmark achievement for the company was receiving a Jerome Robbins Foundation grant to document Eternal NOW at BAM. The resulting film is now part of the permanent Dance Division Collection at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
Over more than three decades, Young Soon Kim has also become one of New York’s leading dance curators, producing and presenting large-scale festivals that champion rising choreographers and new voices in contemporary dance. Join L’Alliance New York at French Camp this summer at its Manhattan and Montclair campuses. Running for nine weeks from late June through late August, L’Alliance offers one of the longest and most affordable French immersion camp experiences in the New York area. This year, children of all ages and levels of French dive into the world of art in all its forms—from music and theater to visual arts and movement—all in French. Older students extend their learning through inspiring cultural experiences across New York City for Manhattan campers, and throughout Montclair and the surrounding area for Montclair campers. Enroll now for an adventure your child won’t want to miss. Weekday classes (45 to 90 minutes) are also offered for young children—ages 1–5 in Manhattan and ages 1–7 in Montclair (Saturdays only)—as well as week-long French immersion programs for teens (ages 11–18) at both campuses. 5% sibling and 10% multiple-week discounts are available.
