Hudson River Maritime Museum

KINGSTON, N.Y. –&nbsp;The&nbsp;Hudson River Maritime Museum has announced Walkie Talkie with Us, a new and&nbsp;novel series of educational historic strolls and more vigorous walks in the Kingston Rondout area.&nbsp;Led by an HRMM Educator and avid walker, each 1 -3 mile walk will explore a different neighborhood or street in the Kingston waterfront area (Rondout), uncovering stories behind historic homes and buildings, local landmarks, and the people who shaped Rondout’s past.
Walkie Talkie with Us&nbsp;is different from other walking tours that provide a walk/stop/talk format which are generally anaerobic. Walkie Talkie with Us tours maintain a gentle yet continuous pace which are more aerobic, with the Educator turning, walking and talking, to share stories and local historical musings with the group. Two routes will be offered on a rotating monthly basis, including a less strenuous “stroll” and a more rigorous “hike,” which will include the steep incline of Wurts Street.&nbsp;Routes will be chosen for walkability and seating opportunities, ensuring comfort and inclusion for all participants.

This May, acclaimed historian and filmmaker Stephen Blauweiss headlines a dynamic three-part lecture series that invites audiences to explore the rich, surprising, and often overlooked stories of the Kingston Rondout. Blending meticulously restored historic imagery, engaging storytelling, and multimedia presentations, the series offers a fresh and entertaining perspective on regional and cultural history. Designed for both longtime residents and curious newcomers, each event delivers an immersive experience—far from a traditional classroom lecture—complete with compelling visuals, little-known anecdotes, and opportunities for audience interaction. Join historian Stephen Blauweiss in person for a multimedia presentation and virtual walk through the old neighborhood of Rondout before 600 structures were torn down. There will be many “Then &amp; Now" comparisons featuring a vast array of quality, historic images that Blauweiss has impeccably restored, including many of Kingston Point Amusement Park in its heyday.The presentation will be chock full of lesser-known anecdotes that will delight and inform. Whether you're a native or a newcomer, you'll be surprised how much there is to discover—this is not your 8th grade history class! There will also be time for Q&amp;A at the end. Stephen Blauweiss is an historian with over 30 years experience as an independent filmmaker and&nbsp;produces work on a wide variety of subjects, from art and education to social and environmental issues. He has produced over 75 short films, including three features. Twenty of his short films about artists have aired on American Public Television and have been screened in museums and festivals across the U.S., Europe and Canada, including the New York State Museum, Mass Moca, the Albany Institute of History &amp; Art, and the Dorsky Museum of Art.

Rondout (Re) Visited Multimedia Presentation & Lecture with Stephen Blauweiss

The Hudson Valley is known for its rich diversity of temperate plant species. Many of these plants are edible and have fed the region’s human inhabitants for millennia. At this event, Wild Hudson Valley co-founders Anna Plattner and Justin Wexler will describe the many ways in which they bridge the past with the present by introducing the region’s residents and visitors to these wild foods, which are so much more than just an edible or ecological part of the landscape. From classes on Northeastern Native land stewardship, to guided foraging walks and even a wild food CSA, the couple will discuss the many ways in which they open the region’s eyes (and tastebuds!) to Hudson Valley nature and history. Anna Plattner and Justin Wexler run Wild Hudson Valley, a forest farm and educational organization based in the Catskill Mountains and Hudson Valley. They grow wild-simulated ginseng, shiitake mushrooms, and steward a wide variety of wild plants and mushrooms. Anna and Justin regularly host workshops and consultations focused on Hudson Valley history, wild foods, forest farming, and land stewardship practices. Anna Plattner received her BS from Cornell University, where she majored in Natural Resources. Over the last two decades, she has overseen multiple large-scale agroforestry operations. Justin Wexler holds a BA in History and Anthropology from Marlboro College and a Master of Arts in Teaching and Professional Certificate in Environmental Policy from Bard College. An ethnoecologist, Justin has spent his career either outdoors or deep in archival and ethnographic research to better understand the history, culture, and land management practices of the Native Peoples of the Hudson and Delaware Valleys

&nbsp;Dutch history can be elusive – it’s rarely taught in our schools and with so many disparate parts it often follows a meandering, convoluted path and connections are obscured. Historian/filmmaker Stephen Blauweiss brings this history to life in a fun and engaging way, using a vast array of quality images, maps, and timelines. The Dutch & Their New York Legacy Lecture with Stephen Blauweiss 

This six-session class (18 hours total) is designed for youth ages 13 - 17 who are either new to dinghy sailing or who would like additional opportunities to get out on the water, make new friends from different communities, and learn more about sailing.&nbsp; Spring Session: Orientation: Thursday, May 14 5:00 to 6:30 pm. Classes will be Thursdays, 3:30 - 6:30 pm, May 21 &amp; 28; June 4, 11, 18 &amp; 25.
US Sailing-certified instructors will teach or review the basics of sailing in brief on-land chalk talks, creative land drills and on the water in our fleet of dinghy sailboats. &nbsp;Participants will practice various crew and skipper skills while working as teams with other students. Instructors will coach from nearby safety boats.

High School Sailing Club - 6 Sessions Begin with Orientation

Join us this summer for an exciting, new, all-day youth program combining the considerable strengths and history of the Hudson River Maritime Museum, now in its 47th year! The HRMM Voyager Program offers a truly unique, multi-activity, hands-on opportunity for young participants.&nbsp;Open to all skill levels, our&nbsp;<a href="https://hrmm.app.neoncrm.com/event.jsp?event=9590&amp;" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Seafarers</a>&nbsp;(9-12 years old) and Navigators (13-17 years old) will spend each day sailing for three hours, practicing boat building and woodworking for 90 minutes, and participating in other STEAM activities involving history, crafts, games, and tours on our solar tour boat&nbsp;Solaris, all while fostering learning, friendship, and adventure. Seafarers and Navigators will come together for a mid-day lunch onshore.&nbsp;The program is led by professional woodworkers, museum educators, and US Sailing Certified Instructors who help participants explore how STEAM principles apply in the woodshop and on the water. Classes are held rain or shine each day they are scheduled. We sail in light rain, but if thunderstorms threaten we stay ashore and do other activities.
